Has anyone ever thought about putting a big aircooled turbo VW engine in a small (18' or less) jet boat?? No need to run water lines since it's aircooled and less weight... My 2387 turbo engine I had in my sandrail put out 450 hp which is more than I have in my boat now... I understand why you wouldn't do it in a bigger boat but in a small, lightweight boat it might work... What do you all think?

If you already have the motor and can fab mounts I say do it. I'm low end torque comes into play but you might be able to work around it with a different impeller.

needs more tq. moving a heavy boat thru water that doesnt slip like tires on pavement is no easy task. unless you want to do 35mph all day long. theres a few people using the porsche/subaru boxter engines and even a couple breakthrough rotary turbo motors... but with the power you can crank out of the big block and even the newer small blocks theres no reason to reinvent the wheel unless you want to be "different"

Try it, I'd love to see it done. I'd recommend something like a 16' two seater if you can find one.
I wouldn't recommend a super light weight race hull because you'll spend more time fixing cracks than out having fun with it.

Crazy thought??? I think not! I'm a big supporter. My only concern would be idling at a lake while trying to get out of the no wake zone. Other then that, don't tease is with craziness cause we all love it.

Te VW thing has been done. Trying to fnd the pictures now, it was in a 15' Sprint boat hull in New Zealand. It actually went pretty damn good. If memory serves, vibration was a major issue.

My buddy has a WRX with a few substantial "upgrades" and the car to be honest is the most scary piece of equipment I have ever ridden in... I have witnessed him go through all the gears with all for tires as close to on fire as you can get. He claims just over 700 HP on the chassis dyno, and I don't doubt him for a second.

Substantial upgrades on a WRX motor which is a boxer engine really means substantial. I'm assuming full block and head build including a way bigger turbo injectors and ecu work. Owning a couple of boobaroos and evos back in the day I know a little about these things.
Closest I ever got with a evo motor was 650 horse and that's after a full Tomei stroke job, gt40 turbo, ethanol injection. On pumped gas she only put out 550. All that just a bit under 15k.
Not doubting your friend but getting 700hp out of a 4 cylinder turbo motor is pretty hard to do unless you have Fuc*k you money.
If you can get your hands on that boobaroo motor and slap it into a boat that would be simply bad as*.
Don't forget a 700hp 4 cylinder motor unless built properly is very unreliable. By properly I mean at least 20k into it.

A guy I work with has a twin turbo STI WRX, that he says puts down over 700. Never seen it in person, but I've seen pictures and I've seen other cars and trucks this guy builds. I don't doubt it for a second!

I had a wrx that I swapped the 2.0 block for the boxer 2.5 vf39 sti turbo bigger injectors tuned by Cobb that made 500 hp. Destroyed the trans and LSD after that. Here's a pic of it. It was a sleeper

You could still hook up an oil cooler with an electric fan to help keep it cool so I don't think that would be a big issue
