Title: Cutting Snails
Post by: 79charger on March 28, 2011, 04:54:22 AM
I have Harmann logs and I wanted to go with some nice tips . Problem is 3 1/2 is the smallest I can find in the style I want . Any one cut the step off the snails ???Any issues doing it ? Thanks

I have harman snails and cut off the 3" step down....I run 3 1/2" ss tips.  You also can add a piece of 3" hose on the smaller part to make it 3 1/2 without cutting.  Dont forget to double clamp both ends once installed.  If your tips have the internal butterfly, spray some water based dressing in them after use to keep em from cracking/breaking off.  I have already replaced mine after just 1-2 seasons before doing this.

Just curious....whats the benifit? Are there performance gains or sound differences?

I dont know how the casting is either on the snails. Does it open up the inner diameter of the exit of the snail too? or does this just allow you to run larger exhaust tips?

I have these same exact snails on my southwind and have always wondered if it was worth the hassle to do it.

I cut mine for a straight shot of 3 1/2....If you cut just that 3" part off, it will open the inner up a full 1/2".  I am guessing log style will reduce some horse power so opening it up should only help.

Brad,, the logs are restrictive,, opening that type of snail allows more flow and should increase performance.
