DIY cam slop taker-outer

Passing this along while it's fresh in my mind.  Might be something some of you folks would be interested in....or not.......

Building up my new 496 Chevy.  The fancy-schmancy roller cam button that JEG's sold me is too long.  So rather than try to machine it off to the right length 3X and still have it end up too short (G), I decided to make an externally adjustable set-up, like I've run in my Olds engines.

The photos pretty much tell the story.  The aluminum bar is bolted to the cover to give the 1/2-20 set screw some more meat to hang on to.  Round would have been nicer.  Welded would have been even prettier.  But it was junk I had laying around, and I always took the ugly girls to the dances anyway. I did radius the edges though......

I turned down some 1" stock to make an aluminum button to fit inside the cam gear.  That will be the "bearing".  I machined the end of the set screw flat. I'll put some sealant on the set screw when I "set" the clearance.  The jam nut will hold it in place.  Screw it in until the clearance is gone, then back it off a fraction of a turn to get a few mils clearance.

Not a bad idea.  Cloyes has a similar setup,, bolts right on and cam end play is easily set.

Yep,, but more pricey!

I honestly was not putting yours down, but many guys would not have a lathe to cut the piece of aluminum you put in the cam gear, just threw the Cloyes out there because they are (like yours), much easier to set cam thrust, to where a guy without a dial indicator could even do it if necessary.  Cloyes recommends zero lash,, I guess since the aluminum expands away from the block.

nice.  I might have also stainless wired both attaching bolts and the setscrew together...just in case

Good suggestion.  I used Loctite, since I hate drilling fasteners.
