Well As some of you know, I've got a new mill in the works. My dad and i have teamed up to go after the 10 second and 9 second class in our new race boat next year. But this year the new mill will go in the SWTD. The new motor is going to be 540 + ci 14.5 to 1 callies crank Cp pistons, carrillo rods, spraying up to 300shot of nitrous , and Single dominator
I've been kicking the idea around to go to a dry sump deal on the new motor. Other than the cost "witch i know is A LOT" What are the pro's and cons here.

A dry sump usually allow the oil to run cooler in a racing enviorment and avoids the problem of oil hitting the crankshaft in very high G turns. A dry sump system is more complicated as you normally have at least two oil pumps and has more places to move oil, and more potential places it can possibly fail (hoses, o-rings, connectors, scavenge pumps, etc. Also allows for the engine to sit a lot lower for an overall lower center of gravity. Oil spray jets at the bottom of the cylinders do not get blocked by oil waves as in normal sump engines. Dry sumps give the oil a place to sit and this helps remove air bubbles, minimizing oil aeration. The separate tank gives much more room for larger valve systems that work better for things as cooling circuits for the oil. The only draw backs of the system that I can think of is its overall complexity and the cost and the extra areas it could fail.. Just my .02

While this is a fantastic post, you sort of left out the most profound benefit. ;)
Dry sumps "pull" the oil from the engine, this creates a pretty good "vacuum" thus creating lower crankcase pressures and improves ring seal, this can make a whole bunch of additional HP, add that to the fact that there is reduced crank splash and the pumps pull less HP than a standard pump with the same pressures, the gains can be quite substantial.
Plus they look bitchin and you can determine how much oil you want to run. It also affords you the choice of where to put that weight, weight distribution is huge in a straight line go-fast boat...

eeee just put a crank scraper on that thing and call it good. Just kidding jake, go big or go home. Your already building a monster so might as well go all out.

I never knew what that was untill i stoped by my engine builders place and saw a piece of sheet metal in the bottom of my motor. :screwy: :screwy:

Well, let me put it this way..... If I were ever to build a $20,000 Marathon motor and wanted to take advantage of every possible power adder, you bet your ass.... :sly:
Why else would Jesel and Cloyes build $1500-$2500 timing kits when you can use a $40 double roller from Comp Cams?... ;)
