Dumping 455 and installing an F460 - exhaust plumbing help
« on: September 09, 2019, 10:19:51 PM »
New to the forum, so go easy on me please.

Trying to revive a 1976 Caldwell 19ft boat with a Berkley 12JE.  The boat originally came with a 455 and 3 point mount.  I received the boat with nothing but the pump in it.

I sourced a late model f460 and installed with a 4 point mount and Hardin exhaust logs.  Now for the dilemma......

My transom exhaust ports are a few inches off from where the Hardin log exhaust ports sit when bolted to the F460.  I tried to flex the rubber exhaust hose, but it's too rigid for the short rise/run distance I'm trying to adapt.

I know many people have dumped the 455 and converted to 454 or 460, so what do they typically do about the pre-existing transom holes?

I've done a few-

455 to 454,
460 to 454,
And a 460 to 350.

They lined up reasonably well.

The 460 to 350 swap, I had to put the hose on the transom tip, and the snail end, And then bolt the logs to the head. Took a little too finagle it, but went on. I double clamped all the joints. Dish soap is your friend.

Hope this helps.

I would say that my logs are about 2" below the transom holes and about 9" apart on the port side.  I used some lithium grease and stuffed the port side hose on, but you can see the angles that are pulling away.  The other side the distance looks more like 5".  Are Hardin logs identical on both sides of the motor, or do they have a left and right side that will account for the exhaust port offset?

I tried MIGing up a little adapter pipe that could account for the 2" offset, but this is the easy side..... I don't see any way to pull this off on the hard side.

Lastly, does anybody have an upper Ujoint cover available for sale?

That's not going to work out.

The exhaust, from the back of the snail has to go downhill. The exhaust that you welded an adapter for, will puddle water into the snail.

Something is amiss with the combo.

Definitely needs the tips in a different spot. I can measure my Eliminator, came with a BBF/Berkeley combo factory, for tip placement, both height and width, using the transom plate as a starting point. I can measure on Saturday.

Over transom headers might be an option.

The only thing I can think of a set of Eddie Marine center-rise manifolds with the optional "S" pipes.  The E pump makes that a tight installation.

I was hoping there were a few different types of Hardin Logs for an F460 so I could simply change the manifold or the snails.

I have a set of Bassett headers, but they also run into the transom

So I bought those Hardin Long Bolt manifolds and they are really nice, but unfortunately they make my problem worse because the runners slope downward.

Anybody have some other ideas?

Take the snails off and flip flop them and should raise the snails up so they fit

Are you saying put the long bolt manifold snails on the regular manifolds?  This would gain me about 1/2" in height I think.

Called Eddie Marine today to inquire about the center riser style manifold, which would definitely solve my problem.  Unfortunately they only make this for SBC and BBC......this is so frustrating!

I know there is a center riser out there for a 460 Ford, I've seen them.

Sounds like the best possible way.
