Title: Engine life
Post by: chevyII on May 07, 2016, 02:04:00 PM
Im looking at a carerra 21' with original 454 i believe it's a '99. It has 632 hrs. Does anyone know the average life expectancy of that engine? It has been a typical family boat.

Consider 1,200 hours to be the equivalent of about 150,000 miles on a car.  So consider the life expectancy to be more than half used up.

This obviously depends on how it was driven,  what modifications and what maintenence has been done.

600 plus hours don't scare me too much,  that being said,  I've rebuilt engines with way less hours and five times that,  so it's a crap shoot.

I think it's better for them to run than it is for them to sit.

Very bottom line.....are you comfortable with what you are paying. Most Carrera's go for premium.
Is it a jet or I/O,how many owners, lots of skiers or tubers, family or "kid" owners, any past motor or drive work?
Most Carrera are heavy and require a good trailer. If it's an open bow that's a lot of vinyl to look after or replace.
The 454's are a stout engine should last a "very" long time with the proper maintenance.
Very, very bottom line.....it's really up to you. Good luck with your decision!

If it's clean that's a steal IMO.
