I am getting a clicking noise from the passenger side and think its an exhaust leak because it starts getting louder as the motor warms up and can barely be heard when cold. Looked all over the manifold and didn't see any cracks. So maybe blowing between manifold and gasket? Or could it be valves? All valves are snug. Move just a little

the best way to check is with a stethoscope, the other way is rev up the motor. if the ticking follows the revs its the valves. how do the heads look? are they painted??? if so look to see if the paint is being burnt off. then youll know its the exhaust gaskets.

I had a bad hyd lofter that was ticking. It didn't make noise all the time. Especially at idle. It would tick and then stop tick a few times stop etc.

How about a spark plug that's not all the way in?!! Decided to check plugs and #8 I could take out (unscrew) by hand. The noise stayed the same but was louder when cruising

no that is not going to cause a tick. it does sound like an exhaust leak. id pull the manifolds look at the gaskets, there cheap enough. if it is a gasket have the manifolds sanded flat.

How about a spark plug that's not all the way in?!! Decided to check plugs and #8 I could take out (unscrew) by hand. The noise stayed the same but was louder when cruising

This will make the noise you describe...
I would re torque all the plugs and recheck.
Exhaust leaks are very easy to find in total darkness.... :sly:
If all else fails, re run the valve lash... If you have a set of rocker bugs, you could run the engine with the valve covers off.... ;)

My son saw these when he was like three and called them bugs and it stuck... I guess it was an inside joke thing on my part...

I'm pretty sure you just have an exhaust leak, but for your amusement heres what I went through with my last boat. It had that same tick (BBC, pass side of motor) I checked the exhaust, no leak, no cracks. So I checked all the valves, it needed it anyway (because I didnt set them) but no loose valves. Fired it back up and it had the same tick. :mad: Finally tracked it down to the intake, yea, the intake. It was an EGR intake with a plate over the EGR ports. Whoever made the block off plate used a piece of material that had a small hole in it, so they threaded a screw into the plate, the screw fell out and caused the leak. :screwy:
Just goes to show you, you never know what someone before you might have done, so check everything. ::)

Interesting. does it hurt anything if it is leaking there? beside being kinda annoying? It was still making noise today after I tightened the plugs back up. It is a 455 with performer intake. so it could be the exhaust crossover?

that depends, if you let it go and it progressively gets worse , the answer is yes. if it stays and is just annoying then no.
