Title: Exhaust log question

What is the deal with these angled elbows.  Why are there no snails bolted up? Educate me please. Is this better performing?

I believe they were meant mainly for a v drive boat that the exhaust sit well ABOVE waterline if you're looking to sell or trade I've been looking for some.
 I have a set of snails I'd trade, assuming the bolt pattern is the same
