First was a back fire from the carb again at first start. Thought i had the timing dialed but it is just not happenings. Ill be getting a new distributor but i want dependability over performance. Its also the second time i hear that my carb isnt the greatest for a boat setup due to the vacuum secondary but i did do some youtube mods to it and the boat performed better than ever with the rpms getting up to 4800 for a short sec when i got on it just to see if the mods worked. I was never able to get it passed 4000 but she woke up yesterday. Then after some laps and some fishing pauses it started acting up and eventually wouldnt start.
So my main question. Distributor and carb setup up on a bbf 460 with no motor upgrades that im aware of. Dependability over performance

Coil and distributor first. Vacuum or no vacuum

Do you have good fuel pressure? Is there fuel in the bowls when you go to start it?

Yes. And when i pull the throttle i see the squirt of fuel. After it died it sounded like it wanted to start but just didnt want to. I thought it was a fuel issue but i can hear the pump , the filter was full.

No i didnt have tools on the boat when it all went down. Then we still made the best of a lake day without the boat. Came home and parked it cause it was time for dinner.

Have you checked the plugs?
What YouTube mods did you perform on the carb?
Which distributor do you currently have? If an older points type, maybe it is time for an upgrade. Don't just replace parts for the sake of replacing parts. You should decide if you are going to replace your distributor before you replace cap, rotor, or wires for compatibility.
Start with the stuff that doesn't cost anything, then cheapest, and work towards most expensive.
Take appropriate steps to ensure your plugs are new or are in good condition and gapped properly.
Inspect all of your plug wires for damage and resistance. Replace if necessary.
Inspect your cap and rotor and replace if necessary.
There are a lot of videos on YouTube that can show you how to test your coil and enter ignition system.
Reliability comes from ensuring your components are in good working order before you get on the water.

The secondary on the carb only works when the rpms reach a certain point and are controlled by a vacuum line. Being that i couldn't get the rpms passed 4000 this video i watched of some dude bended the metal hook so it forces the secondary to open at about 3/4 throttle. In my opinion it worked cause it would easily rez to 5000 at home and seemed like i couldve done it on the water easily but the wife and kids weren't diggin it. This run was my best run since owning the boat. Until whatever happened happened. Im only getting what sounds like the beginning of it wanting to start with backfire from the carb. Ill definitely be getting new plugs they arent looking great and wires. The dizzy has no name that i can see. Ill be openning it later today. Thank you for your response

Thats a good start but if the problem gets worse as the day goes on, it could be the coil heating up and causing problems. I would check that next if these 2 dont help it.
Also, i would just plug the vacuum can, and time it without it.
Good luck
