I was talking with Nordie yesterday and we were discussing engines and what I'm doing with the "locust" plague of 460's I have laying around. I pulled three around, apart and on stands this past weekend trying to figure a pretty inexpensive way to put one good one together quickly for my "Yellow Submarine" that my Aunt wants to buy. First one? not so good, rod bearings completely shot (Supposedly a turnkey engine, go figure, but I only paid I think $250 for it.......blocks good, crank can work, heads great,.....but not my point).

Put the second one on the stand, pulled the cast iron intake, WOW! cam looks NEW, no signs of water leakage anywhere, pushrods clean, double valve springs, new valve seals........flip it over and pull off the high dollar Dooley oil pan..........looks good, save for one thing I'll post pics of in a minute. Pulled ALL the rod and main caps (Which I figured on only spot checking), and they are great! Rotating the thing over, piston skirts have no slap marks, minor abrasions, the bores still have the crosshatch on them........perfect for what I am trying to do here!

But there's this pump/pickup dealio.........can someone explain to me why the fock anyone would do this on a fresh build...........

my pickup tube is tack welded to the oil pump... but nothing ghetto looking like that...

Nah! Ordered a new pickup from Dooley yesterday, $65 after sending pics of what was done to theirs, and a new M84D Pump, $30 

All THAT work to save $30 and destroy the pickup tube in the process?? Really?

Looks functional to me. Indeed, it's not particularly pretty but I'll take "function" over "form" any day.

That's a Dooley pickup, by the way. It appears to be the one originally intended for an M84BHV front sump pump,
but then someone cut off the pickup's pump mating flange and welded the press-in pump's pickup fitment in its place.

The funny thing is that Dooley already makes a pickup for the press-in pumps, but even though that's the case this
modified one has a nice feature that the Dooley version does not: the support bracket which secures the pickup to
the pump body. It might not be a pretty weld or a detailed bracket, but the pickup sure as hell ain't going anywhere
since it's secured in place. 

Custom shit rocks , and yes, some custom fab work looks better (or worse) than others. What matters most is
how well it serves its purpose.
