This is the first change I have done with this boat. I must have the wrong dipstick. I drained my pan and changed the filter. The oil out seemed to be around 4 quarts. The dipstick showed full before I did the change. The dipstick was bone dry after I drained it.
I put in 3 quarts and the dipstick showed full ? The boat is level.
Should I just put in the rest of the oil ?
btw another question, since this was my first change I was diligent to measure the amount out to replace it with the right amount to go in.
It doesn't make sence, is this a 5 qt or 6 qt pan anyhow ? It is a stock 1976.

Well I ran the boat a bit which dropped the oil but still now it reads full at 4.5 qts ??

I believe the front sump pans are 5 qts plus filter. This assumes a full-length filter, not a "shorty" filter.
I can't diagnose your oil volume over the internet, I can't see what you have for a dipstick, etc.....but I know I would like more than 4 quarts in my jet boat engine.

In boats its hard to get ALL the oil out. when I do my changes I lift and lower the bow of the boat. Some drain plugs are on the side of the pan and a bit up from the bottom of the pan, leaving the dirtiest oil still in the bottom of the pan. If the drain plug is on the side then jack up the boat trailer on the oppoisite side of the pan a few inches. it willl help get that last few pints out. I also run 2-4 quarts of fresh oil spread out over the valve's,springs and rockers, to flush as much old oil out. It works good but cost a few more bucks, worth it to me tho. My dooly 12 qt pan has 2 drain plugs also, both on the side of the pan located on the passenger side, front and rear of the pan. Good luck. ;D

Yeah the plug is on the side. I think I'll do oil changes more often since I can't get all the bad oil out.
