Title: Ford 460 hard to start
Post by: Wild west jet on August 25, 2017, 09:01:20 PM
I have a question.  I have a ford 460 with holley 750 dp.  When I drop in water, turn key on, I can hear fuel pump pushing fuel to carb. Wait 5 seconds or so then I light her up......but she don't light. After approx. 5 to 10 attempts she fires. Runs great. Then the rest of the day she starts no problems. Is this because there is no choke or is there a choke???  Is there anything I can do to remedy this problem. It's a pain sitting in marina trying to get boat to fire Not to mention a bit embarrassing. Thanks for any input.

What's ur regulator set at ? Should be set to 5-6 psi . Don't wait 5-6 seconds just fire it up as soon as u turn the key

So, are you pumping the throttle at all?

Mine takes 1-2 pumps when its cold (not having been run that day), and 1/2 a pump (more of a bump) if it has been run earlier.

Chokeless boats here, too, and electric fuel pump.

BTW, what Ignition system?

Unfortunately no fuel pressure guage. Plan to install this winter. I have to pump several times. I have the red msd ignition with msd wire.  Again this is just original light up.

Single carb on a tunnel ram is not the greatest fuel distrabution. Make sure the squirter jets are working properly. If so it might be just not enough fuel to ALL the cylinders.

I'll check this weekend. Just bought a new Qt 950 carb. Maybe that will help. I will also turn key on and give foot throttle 2 big pumps.

Try to push the accelerator pump down 1 or 2 times then fire it up ,
It might have a bad accelerator pump diafram
