When If ever is the last time it ran? Or is it a new build? If you leave your caps on your going to hear about it.(I guess some people are cap sensitive)

needs three things fuel, spark, compression

I may be asking the same thing in a few days.  New build and new Dizzy.  Found TDC now do I point the rotor at #1 on the cap or the motor?

I just took off my tr last night and I started thinking , if I knew I was on the compression stroke why couldn't a person keep the plug wires off the plugs and use a timing light to set initial timing?  Or does the motor have to be running?

How strong is the spark?

The way I understand it, the rotor will be at #1 on the cap - point that to #1 on the motor; be sure your on compression stroke or you'll be 180degrees off.

You are surprised? ::)  Sorry had to do it!

you can put #1 anywhere you want as long as you are at tdc then put the dizzy in and make whatever the rotor is pointing at #1. and if that didnt work your 180 out because you werent on the compression stroke. hope this makes sense to you ???

On a lot of disti's there is an arrow and an alignment mark. This marks when the ignition will actualy be triggered.

Turn the engine over until the intake on #1 is closing. Keep going until the engine where #1 is at 15 deg (or where ever you like your initial timing to be) before TDC. Then turn the disti where the arrows line up. Wire #1 to

No timing light needed, and it will be perfect whne you fire it.

You need a spark to trigger the timing light, plus there is no real oil pressure during cranking.

... there is no real oil pressure during cranking.

Hey Speedy, is that true still if all the spark plugs have been removed?

What type of ignition? Do you run a box If so is it the same brand as the dist. I tryed a mallory dist with a msd box dosn't work. Dose it crank real fast that wold be a sign of low compression maby tight valves. Do you run a ballast resistor on the hot wire to the dist. It's not needed if your running a box. My mallory required it when I was running it with no box. once I added the box I added msd dist. If it is popping then probly a timming issue.

I TRIED THE TIMING AGAIN BUT IT WONT GO.  THE LAST TIME I TOOK IT OUT IT RAN PERFECT ALL DAY THEN WHEN I GOT BACK TO THE DOCK IT DIED AND THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I TOOK IT OUT AND THE CARB WAS GIVING ME TROUBLE SO I REBUILT IT AND NOW I AM HERE TRYING TO GET IT GOING.  SO THE TIMING IS GOOD I HAVE COMPRESSION SPARK AND FUEL.  AND IT IS ALL MSD.  NOW WHAT?

...  SO THE TIMING IS GOOD I HAVE COMPRESSION SPARK AND FUEL...

That's not possible, otherwise your engine would be running.

... THE LAST TIME I TOOK IT OUT IT RAN PERFECT ALL DAY THEN WHEN I GOT BACK TO THE DOCK IT DIED AND THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I TOOK IT OUT AND THE CARB WAS GIVING ME TROUBLE SO I REBUILT IT...

It must have died for a reason, it either lost compression, spark, fuel, or the timing changed.

Check you'r chain. I bet you got ALOT of play in it and that will make it slip one way or another.  Retard/advanced soooo.... get out the tools and fix it. Summer coming to dam quick.

ONE of the most common things to happen in this scenario (and over looked) is does it have a top mount starter and has it just been replaced? Often times on Fords we've found that someone has installed a standard rotating starter on a reverse rotating application (parts stores don't know the difference ,its easy to do)  ,so there wil be spark ,fuel and compression but no start if this is not the case :Pull the spark plugs (set aside to clean and dry) spin the motor a while to clear fuel (coil disabled) ,articulate TDC @ the dampner and check the rotor position, recheck your firing order and firing order rotation, Drain some fuel from you carb ,put it in a clear dish and see if its h20 contaminated ? IF everything check out put the plugs back in advance the timing a few (clicks)degrees past (before TDC) and whack it with a shot of ether If it doesn't try to light  STOP and call me I'm happy to help Tom

Can you tell us exactly what has been done since it quit?

it sat and i rebuilt the carb thats it.  and it has had a cover on it the entire time.

It sounds like your guessing that it quit because of the carb.  You need to do a little more diagnosis into the cause of it quitting.  If you don't know the history of this engine, I would look at the timing chain/timing very carefully, because it sounds like it may have jumped time.

Also, since you just went through the carb what do you have the mixture screws set at for a baseline?

hes right id check the spark your gona want a purple spark not yelow and yes it does make a diference had that hapen to me befor mabee im msd stupid bit does it have a coil god willing you didnt jump a link on that chain also tdc and the # 1 plug wire goes to the # 1 on the distributer if i read that question right also replace fuel filters to this gas now days has a tendancy to chew up the paper and clog your jets see if ther clean to good luk

oops forgot 1 trik to on timing to see if you jumped a link take out # 1 plug and reconect it to the plug wire and ground it to the engine with ruber coated plyers and if you have some good rubber gloves insulated are best turn key on and fuel off and turn the crank slowly(using a rachet on the balancer bolt)as soon as you see spark from the plug chek to see if your piston is all the way up or on its downstroke if its there your ok if not you have a jumped timing link

remove dist cap turn crank to rt then left watch rotor see if you have exesive play if so timming chain is loose and you may have jumped time if rotor dont move you may have sheared pin on dist gear if both are good spray carb cleaner in carb try to start if starts and dies gas is bad
