What engine your boat has would be a good info to know. My first guess is that you have the wrong flexplate.

its a 460. i guess what i need to know is if the weight on the flexplate is to make just the flexplate balanced or does it co-balance with the crank and harmonic balancer.

I was told to bring my flex plate to the machine shop when I had the engine internally balanced...  I'll check to see if I can see a counterweight or any sign of balancing done to it tommrrow.

well i put it on and everything seems to work great when its running. pretty smooth. the only problem now is what originally tore it up. the starter sticks sometimes and makes a horrible noise. i dont get it. new starter, new flexplate. you would think it would be ok. now im thinking it might be the ignition switch might be causing it. anyone with any ideas please let me know.

exactly ;) the weight is for the balance of the flywheel not the motor, if it was wrong it would vibrate.
i'm going through this same thing with my hondo. i tore up one starter and flywheel on break-in because i couldnt shut it down. when that was over i got a shim from napa and that stopped the starter from hitting the flywheel when the engine is runnning, but now i need a new flywheel so off to the swapmeet i go.  keep us posted.

Guys, you CAN NOT, MUST NOT indescriminantly swap counterbalanced flywheels/flexplates/harmonic balancers for non-counterweighted versions!!!!!!!!!!!

The counterweights you see on them are there to compensate for changes the manufacturers made inside the engines. "Internally balanced" engines will not have the counterweights, "externally balanced" engines will have them.

With the BBC, all FACTORY engines 454 and larger REQUIRE the counterweighted components. 427 and smaller were internally balanced from the factory and thus require non-conterweighted components.

With the 460 Ford, the early engines used non-counterweighted components. A change in the internal block design, where they extended the cylinder bores down closer to the crankshaft, forced a change in crankshaft design. This change made the counterweighted balancer and flywheel/flexplate necessary.

Any "externally balanced" engine can be converted to internal balance, but it must be done by an engine balancing shop. They will need to add "Mallory Metal", which is heavier than the metal of the crankshaft, to accomplish this. It is NOT done by simply swapping parts.

i forgot about this post. i couldnt find an internal bal flexplate and i have a 2y crank wich is internal so what i did was get the external flexplate and take the weight off and it works great. if you have a 3y crank the ext bal you will have the hatchet weight on the snout of the crank and the weight on the flexplate. like old said you cannot mix and match these parts.
