which distributor to get to replace older points style
« on: August 05, 2015, 12:32:37 AM »
I would like to get away from the old points style distributor that I have now. It works fine as is but I would like to upgrade it. What do you guys recommend? My friend that helped tune the carbs told me to just get the conversion cap for it but if I can do even better by completely swapping then I may just do that. Engine is a mildly modified 461 olds.

I'm a fan of the protronics flame thrower. I think it's a very good set up exp for the money. You don't have a full blown race motor so MSD is very expensive and not needed. Due to the tunnel ram I cannot run an HEI system or I would still would.  I have had both systems and on a mid to mild motor I did not see a difference from one to the other.

The Pertronix Flame Thrower is a good choice.  I'm using one currently and it's working great.  Pertronix does offer a marine version if you want or need one.  They offer two types of control modules also, one is pretty basic and compatible with separate CD ignition boxes (msd) or one that is equipped with its own CD unit with a built in RPM limiter.

If you want to keep cost down, go to a junk yard and get an HEI unit. Get the lockout kit and lighter springs from MSD. simple and easy, plus you can get parts for them at any auto parts store.
