I found a newly rebuilt 454 with a Gen V block, I was wanting to run a mech fuel pump engine but there isn't a boss on the block so I'd have to run an electric. My question is... How many are running an electric fuel pump? I have a brand new Holley Blue pump, how well will it pull fuel from the tanks when my fuel lines are on top of the tanks? It was my understanding that the pump is supposed to be mounted below the tank level so it is gravity fed and will then push fuel to the carb, which seems impossible with my lines on top. Any guidance is GREATLY appreciated

You're correct with a GEN V engine you will have to use an electric pump, The Holley blue pump is a good pump and will feed an engine up to about 600 hp, and yes it should be gravity fed to make life easier on it. When I built my boat I did elect to go with a Holley mechanical marine 130 gph pump, but I have a 1978 Mark IV ,I like simplicity and I am more of a fan of mechanical items when I can get away with it, just to make it more fool proof. I have had some issues with electric pumps in the past, a mechanical pump can last for twenty years...

That's exactly the same reason I want to run mechanical... I currently have a mildly built Pontiac engine and an electric fuel pump and want to ditch the whole setup in favor of a BBC running a mechanical fuel pump but came across the engine in question at what I felt was a good deal. When I went to look at the engine, I didn't realize it didn't have a mech fuel pump boss and was quite disappointed once I got there

If you want to keep the V and run a electric pump I highly suggest to yank the tanks and tap them on the bottom rather the top. It'll work with the lines being on top but you'll go through electric fuel pumps every season. If you decide to go that route you should always have a spare in your float.

Just remember to pull the anti-siphon valves and install ball valves instead. Also, the oil pressure switch is an absolute must.
Put a screen filter in front of the pump and push through a water separator.

Here's the engine... Guy started at $2500 and dropped it to $2000 obo and he's including a stand and hoist (which I don't need either) so if I could get it for around $1700 I thought that was a good start... What are your thoughts?

In that engine description there are no real spec's, nothing, no numbers. Plus you're torque WILL NOT be higher than a HP number with engines that we play with. Just the whole lingo doesn't make sence, first you don't line bore the cam tunnel, crank cut 20%, heads triple cut and slaved?...WTF?.who describes engines like that? My personal opinion I think it's nothing real special and I think they just want to unload it and they pulled a HP and Torque number out of their ass. Being an engine builder myself and if I was selling an engine, I would have everything listed on a build sheet, and if I was going to boast about power numbers I would have the dyno sheets. In my world talk is cheap, numbers & math are everything..oh and don't forget the money. Always remember, you get what you pay for, $1,700 is a price for decent machine work and balancing, not a whole long block.

Yeah... Supposedly the guy got it from his buddy who got it from his dad and then the dad/son had a falling out so he can't get any specific info from the dad who built it... I'm guessing that's why he's selling it so cheap since he doesn't have all the specs but I could be wrong. My plan was to c/o the cam, intake and heads anyway and eventually put in a stroker crank. I was looking for a decent long block and thought this might work

My best advise for you is to just take your time and put together a plan on what you would really want, do the project once not two and three times. I actually would stick with a Mark IV block, the aftermarket companies cater to those more. Build the engine on paper first, have a direction with part numbers and prices and a good machine shop. Not sure how radical or how much power you're looking for, but sounds like you're aiming towards a 496ci BBC...best of luck, not sure where you're located, if I can offer any services send me a p/m and I'll see if I can help you out.

HP above a certain level doesn't come cheap or easy, you have to really work for it. Although those numbers can be achieved always remember reliability is going to suffer. There is always a sacrafice when you build an engine to produce impressive power. What it's going to come down to is how much power can you afford to build. From this originating thread you were looking to get your hands on a long block assembley for roughly $2,000, that most likely would of been worthless to produce numbers like that. To be quite honest your looking at a cost of $8,500-9,500 for a quality engine that is assembled from scratch by someone that knows what they are doing, then dyno tune it, that's the ONLY way to find out what the engine needs as far as timing, air/fuel ratio ect...Just my two cents worth from the years that I have been doing this, but I don't know what your budget is, that dictates alot.

We had be built 12.25 :1 marathon motors with nothing but the best in parts spent thousands of dollars, hours tuning and playing with different cams and combos of parts and came up to approximately 600 horse on spec fuel (at the time it was Jet 106). Granted it was not tuned to the ragged edge, but I doubt seriously there was another 100 ponies hiding in it.

Right now a complete build budget isn't there which is why I was trying for something inexpensive but once escrow closes on my house I'll be able to build exactly what I want. You guys know WAY MORE than I on this subject so give me your opinions... I have 4 major things I'm wanting... A nasty sounding idle, pump gas friendly, as reliable as possible and lots of HP! Sounds easy enough, right?! Haha So give me your thoughts on how much HP I can expect ...

Depends on a few things, but I would say a pump gas 496 with a blower set up right would be good for a reliable 800 HP.
I fear anything else would be,for lack of a better term, temporary.
Not meaning any offense. Just attempting to keep it real.

I can vouch for the pump gas motor I'be been running for the last 3 years. Single carb 461 ci BBC with Brodix heads. Thing made 625 on the dyno. 10.2 to 1 if we made that, I think you can make 700 on pump gas with a 496 no problem. 👍👍👍👍👍

The word that shut it down for me was "Inexpensive".
I can tell you this, 700 HP would be tuned to the gnats ass and on the ragged edge. You could not cheat on one single part. A 496 would have to turn near 5,800 RPM+ to make those numbers. Not sure reliability would be there. This does not sound like a quarter miler, but more of a river racer.

I was thinking I wanted to be able turn close to 6000 rpm (according the berk impeller chart, and I read in a post where you said on average anything over about 6200 rpm caused problems) and you are correct, a river racer... I wouldn't be running it there often, I just want the option to kick some ass every now and again... You know, cruise to the sand bar and then make a few hot laps and then cruise back type of thing

I know of plenty of pump gas 496's on the river that make north of 700. And they are nowhere near the "ragged edge" on the tune up.
My buddy brad made 714hp with an 088 Iron headed deal. isky hydraulic roller camshaft 680 lift 250 intake 258 exhaust duration 108 lobe center 10.5 to 1 👍 it can be done.

I know it can be done.... But not on a restricted budget and not straight out of the gate.
Not trying to be the septic tank swizzle stick here. I can't tell you how many times I have seen guys build a decent big block and expect to set the world on fire, only to be completely disappointed when it does not work out.
For big block Chevy's, I use 1.125hp/cube as a pretty reliable pump gas guideline, anything over about 1.6hp/cube becomes more an more "temporary". Especially when a budget is mentioned.
Then again, I am very conservative. My friends call me a kill joy sometimes...
Keep in mind also, it depends on what you guys are calling "pump gas". The best we can do here is 90 AKI in the summer. Once in a while we can find 91 AKI.

Well that sucks, I thought Rogers could handle speed. Although I'm pretty sure if I got it 90-95 ish I'd be more than happy... Of course, I've never ridden in a boat that fast so I might be completely happy with 75-80?

In my little jet, at 85 MPH you would swear to God almighty you were going well over a hundred.
That being said, in the aluminum tunnel hull, 90 felt like 65.... It may have had something to do with the full face helmets and hearing protection, but I like to think it was because the hull was sitting on a nice little cushion of very fast moving air... :sly:

The beautiful thing about the huffer is that it relaxes the cylinder head/cam portion of the game. Just a wee bit.
The bottom end still needs to be built like a brick crapper though.

If I was building it keeping budget in mind it would be a splayed main two bolt, if you already had a four bolt block, it would be studded.
I was told years ago that a main girdled two bolt block was every bit as "strong" as a factory four bolt was, the problem is when the caps "crabwalk", that is when things get gnarly real quick.
If money were no object (and it's not with me, because I have none) then I would build my platform on a Merlin III splayed main by World.. That is if It wasn't a Donovan aluminum...
The again, if I could afford my taste, I would be on offshore and fly, not hanging with all you guys LMAO

It sounds like you're settling in on the blown application, reading the other comments, everyone is making sence, I do agree you might want to take it down a notch with a few of your expectations, like I said HP and speed just doesn't fall out of trees. As for a block, I know a factory 4 bolt main Mark IV block can hold up to about 800HP without starting to wiggle, meaning cylinder wall flex or cap dance. I used to have a 427 BBC GM block that made 771 naturally on alky, but that engine had 14.2:1 compression and allot of other nice goodies, but cylinder pressure is cylinder pressure no matter how you stuff it, and that's what makes power. In a nutshell an engine is a tool, fuel is the only thing holding the energy, the engine dictates how much energy can be extracted from the fuel and how much can you burn to push hard on the pistons. If budget permits I would go with a Dart big M splayed iron 4 bolt for the strength, remember the block is the foundation. As far as RPM goes with a 4.250" stroke holding rpm maybe at 6,000 that would put piston speed at 4,250 fpm, that's a moderate piston speed. Next, rod ratio needs to be looked at, a minimum .250 long H-beam rod needs to be used, making the rod ratio 1.50, whitch isn't great. A .400 long rod would be better bringing the ratio up to almost 1.54, that's about as good as it's going to get. Then hang those on a forged set of custom pistons with a raised pin height. See, there is some thought and planning to all of this if the end result (project) will be successful and live. So keep saving your pennies and get with someone that knows and work with a plan, all else will fail.

I run a 496 that is around 800 HP on a single carb. It is also 13 to 1 and runs on VP 110. The cost is north of 10,000 and it has been reliable. But I agree with the group on this matter. There is no magic number for triple digits it depends on your hull and setup. Just let's say your going to need all 800hp then some. Try 496 pump gash motor

That's not necessarily a bad idea either... Then it's pretty tame most of the time just cruising around until I open the bottle, hit the switch and floor it for some short sandbar drags

Be aware, there is more to running the "bottle" than many think. You better know what you're doing when it comes to setting up your fuel system and curve, I have seen allot of carnage over the years from NOS, before you blink you can torch a piston. It's not the nitrous that makes the power, it's the abundance of fuel the engine can now burn from feeding the engine more oxygen and nitrogen, but look out if you run lean, kiss the pistons good bye, or you can hammer out the bearings and rings from detonation, seen it all happen. Again, don't forget NOS is just another way of creating very high cylinder pressures, so higher octane fuel is needed and retarting the ignition timing...just some food for thought.

Most the boats on the river hitting triple digits that I have run into are N/A motors with NOS just remember true triple digit boats are not as common as some might think. If you are not stuck on that hull I would look to make a change. Most guy's look for right hull and the motor is secondary in the 100mph process. Whatever choice you make wear a lifeline. I have attached a couple of pictures for you tx 19 gullwing and a 496N/A motor.

Jim, you're one of the guys that do know what it takes to make nitrous work proberly, and your right, it's not the nitrous that's the problem, it's the one that doesn't understand what it is and how it works, they end up with a failed or burned up engine. Yes, an engine that will see a big shot, does indeed have to be specifically built for it. Are you just color sanding and bufffing it out, or are you getting it ready for a whole new paint job? Was your hp rating of around 800 with or without the bottle? I'd like to see your finished project someday. :thumbup:

No color sand complete paint job. With some glass work and a new interior It is around 800 hp off the bottle. It's on a 250 - 300 shot now. The motor was built by Bostick for NOS. It is my four seater family boat with a attitude.

That's pretty wild, when you first bought the boat, did you plan on making it that fast?, or did you just get the bug over time?..like we all do...LOL...As you saw mine a few weeks ago, everything is still fresh, and I'm having fun with it, I'll keep it like it is for quite some time, mid 70's for something that's not all that radical and it has proven itself to be reliable to go out and have fun and drink beer...LOL.. :beer:.. :thumbup:.. ^-^

I bought it that fast. Chris Lupo built this boat I have just been changing a few things here and there.

NOS in not the monster it made out to be. You will need to have a motor set up to run NOS with anything over a 100 shot. I run two separate fuel systems one VP 110 for normal use and one with 116 for the NOS. I also have a separate holley blue just for the NOS solenoid. You will also need a retarder the set up depends on the shot size. Most the boats on the river hitting triple digits that I have run into are N/A motors with NOS just remember true triple digit boats are not as common as some might think. If you are not stuck on that hull I would look to make a change. Most guy's look for right hull and the motor is secondary in the 100mph process. Whatever choice you make wear a lifeline. true story right here!!! Nitrous is your friend, when you know what you are doing. 👍👍👍👍👍 pull 2 degrees for every 50 hp shot and a good fuel. Also flowing fuel pressure is a must for a big shot 👍👍👍👍

No color sand complete paint job. With some glass work and a new interior It is around 800 hp off the bottle. It's on a 250 - 300 shot now. The motor was built by Bostick for NOS. It is my four seater family boat with a attitude.

I've talked to Bostick twice about building me an engine when it comes time and now that the Gen V in question is out, looks like I'm back on the idea of just having the motor I want built instead of trying to find a deal on something already together

I have looked into to it, a few big hitters have said not worth the hassles. CONS: fuel consumption, no go with NOS, draining fuel, water in fuel, fuel testing. PRO's cost!!!!!! For a race boat I think it would be a good deal. But I have heard of quite a few guy's melting motors down. I don't get the real story on the problems but it seems to be a lean condition to blame most of the time. To some guys it has been voodoo but I would say knowledge and experience would solve most of the problems. When I looked into it the cost to convert it was not worth the savings over 110 for the run time on my boat for a year. This information is just what I have seen or have squeezed out of a few guys by no means facts. Most guy's don't want to talk about the 12,000 motor they just melted. The guy's that I have seen run it are not river boats more race stuff.

From what I've heard it takes like 25% or more fuel and flow to run it. Kinda like running alcohol witch is even a higher percentage. I'd consider it if it wasn't so hard to get where I live. For now I can live with 110 at the pump. Depending on my final numbers might determine weather I have to run 113.
