Title: getting ready for ming
Post by: Ralph Brunt on February 09, 2008, 06:24:17 PM
went over to pops house this morning to asses the situation, this is how we left it after the parker race. it hasn't been touched since.
we pulled the v/c to see if there was any moisture and to run the valves
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10041/ready_for_ming_004.jpg)
the white stuff you see is moisture, it probably would have burned off but we wanted to clean as much as we could got.

it sure was hot today >:D

a little wd-40 to help lube things before we fired it, as well we pulled the dizzy and primed the oil system

i got a new fuel pressure reg for x-mas ;)

and the dreaded task of removing the drive shaft before starting :banghead:  man i hate doing that

Ah come on man  :D  how is my Chevy supposed to breathe as good as your Ford   :banghead:  with the bigger ports and all when I don't even know your cam's duration? According to the race results you're the one to beat!  ;)

rod, the specs are useless to anybody unless they have the same combo, because the cam is a custom for my combo. not to mention there is another ford out there that may try to get his motor to run a little better by using my specs

edit: and i'm not talking about Brad, i have a roller that i took out if he want to try it

Yea I didn't think of that... probably not a good idea for someone to post up their entire engine's specs if they wanted to stay number 1...  :P

I was just trying to figure how big of a cam it takes to make that much normally aspirated HP, since I am clueless. I saw a cam last night that had 810 lift on it and something like 320 duration at 050.  :o  Makes me wonder when the valves actually close  :D

rod, it's no real secret, and engine is nothing more than an air pump and it can only take in and get out so much. so i sent the flow #'s from the heads along with the eng specs to chris straub of stephs oil pans and he did some ghetto math and came up with what i have

If its not good enuf for you then.... ???   ;D Brads engine is gonna do just dandy with the hydraulic flat tap.  From what I've read in the past it takes a whole lot of exhaust work on the factory iron ford heads to take advantage of a .600+ roller.

BTW, the engine sound great Ralph.

:UPDATED:

Just called the shop that ground the cam...

Some perspective for ya Rod. My old 460 with 618RWHP had a .680 lift by 320 intake 318 actually 314 exhaust duration. The duration actually sacrificed A LOT of power but at the same time gave it a nasty lope with the idle below 1000 RPMs. I intended for the truck to be more of a show mobile than anything but ended up liking it way too much. Nothing like the feeling of roasting oversized tires and keeping up with a stock '04 Z06.
Cam grinder seems to think another 30 HP could have easily been had if the duration wasn't so wild.

But Chevy's intake ports are smaller.  :banghead:  ;D

The grinder that did my cam recommended 280ish but the lope of the 300+ is just awesome sounding with the hydraulic roller setup.

280ish at what lift?

680 lift.

Lol, what lift is that 280ish duration at?
Title: Re: getting ready for ming
Post by: UNDONE on February 13, 2008, 12:47:54 PM
I dont remember. I got a cam completely overkill for my application. Just wanted the lope... I think that one was closer to 600.
Had to have a little bit of head work done to accommodate the 680. The other setup would have produced more power. I wanna say it was a 610.

280ish Duration at 600 lift is pretty narly  :D

Bet it sounded good  ;)

To clear up the confusion tony. The duration was in correlation with .050 of lift.
