if im not mistaken, correct me if wrong but the main larger wire on your typical 3 wire alternator is the charge wire that goes to the battery or battery isolator (if more then one battery is used) then on the 2 pin connector there is a brown wire i believe and a red wire, the red wire is the ignition wire it tells the alternator how much power the battery has basically thats basically the hot ignition wire (in a sence the power on to the alternator) then the other brown wire is the idot light to tell that the alternator is working or not.  youc an simply hook up the large wire to the battery then the others to the ignition, then with a volt meter when running check that you have around 13-15 volts runnng then 12volts with the engine off (check at charge wire of alternator) this will show a correct installation (i believe this will only work pre 1985) after that they have different pickups that i believe work magnetially and even though they sell wire adapters for them there not as reliable.

You have the color codes correct, but I've tried using them without an idiot light and it didn't work until I added an idiot light to the circuit.
