so i had replaced my carter mechanical fuel pump (only markings i can find on it are 60425, 6e29a, and 80-343) with one of the off the shelf electric ones at pep boys. and its not giving me enough fuel.

WOT at 4500 rpm, ( peanut port heads ) was too much for the fuel pump thats in there right now, it cut out so i dropped to about half throttle and it picked up and started on its own at 3500 rpm. so i want to replace the fuel pump, but i really dont have any idea what kind of pump to get.

its going in my 454, with peanut port heads casting 14092360, iv been told its an RV cam. not sure on CR. engine casting 14015445, suffix 7xk, intake casting 333841, with a holley 750 vac sec. on top. ignition through a mallory dual points dist.

i want something i could use for a while. when money permits i'd like to change the heads, ( 049's) maybe the bumpstick etc etc.

my goal would be to push just over 5k on the A impeller in my berk e pump.

what kind of fuel pressure do i need? what about the GPH rating? do i go mechanical? electric? (wires are already run for the electric but...)

I got a Clay Smith but it does'nt look like that, maybe I got the wrong one.

Clay Smith mechanical all day long.

The clay Smith is the way to go unless you have a gen 5 or 6.
They push 15 psi and I believe are 140 gph freeflow and will
support up to 1200 hp.
Most guys swear by them, and we have had one on our motor since 2005
with zero problems.
If you want one contact Sweet Performance and they will set you up in no time flat.

are you 100% sure that it's the fuel pump? Without a pressure gauge you might not know. Maybe the carb has some issues. For instance my boat was running like crap in the low rpm range popping and studering and crapping out...when i stabbed the go pedal it ran great. diagnosis i had crud clogging up the needle and seat and the jets in the primaries of the carb, and the secondaries were clear...Fuel issues are sensative, and it may or may not be your fuel pump...use the fuel pressure gauge and see what pressures you are running and go from there...even if your fuel pressure is low it could be something with the tanks, and pickups...I know alot of people (myself included) that throws parts at things until it works, and it's always the last part you buy (obviously) that fixes it...sometimes that can cost you...made a $4,000 oopsies like that one time!

thats kinda like what i did with my distributor. i just started replacing everytihng on my dual points dist. points, cap, rotor, ignition coil, condensor.. when i should have just got myself a hei one, or convert it. its why i posted this, to get everyones feedback first. and yes your right. i picked up a fuel pressure guage today, so next time out i can figure oout what my next move is.

and its fairly clear to me that if it is a fuel pump issue, clay smith is the way to go !!!

got some lake time today. fuel pressure guage is reading around 2 psi at idle and get up to 6 at 3500rpm.

didnt have a chance to hold it WOT (2 year old's first time out, didnt want to scare her)) didnt want it to turn off on me again

everything else seems to be working well, 14volts, something like 70 psi for the oil pressure, and 160* water temp at idle after its warmed up

2 pounds is not adequate pressure, figure minimum of 5 psi, and 7-9 is better.

The Clay Smith is a good pump, but probably not necessary for a medium performance engine.  I say that mostly because it will also require a fuel pressure regulator, so you will be spending quite a bit of money.

I was getting some of the "old school" type fuel pumps that do not require a regulator,, make 7-9 pounds, have run them on a couple of dyno engines with no drop in fuel pressure at 6300 RPM.  One of those was a 632 cubic inch engine with two 850 Quick Fuel carbs, so you can imagine the fuel consumption on that one. 

Carter rotary fuel pump...Also no vent or need a vent line run to carb if your enclosed unlike holley and just vents . The marine version is the same just more expensive as well holley with vent line.
