Title: Grease?
Post by: Jetboat949 on March 15, 2017, 09:12:00 AM
This might be a wildly stupid question but what kind of grease should I use for a jet pump?  I'm guessing marine but I'm not sure if there's some other special kind?  Thanks! 😂

A grease that's rated for high temp and water should work, but ny grease is better than nothing.

Lucas Red and Tacky Home Depot), Amsoil Marine Synthetic (me), Chevron waterproof Synthetic (Grainger), Aqua Lube (absolute mother fugger to clean up).......

All work great. You're looking for lithium based.

Is there a reason not to use 90 weight gear oil in my Berkeley's eye holes? That's all the pump had known for 40 years...

Berkeley bowl bearings do best in oil.

The grease being talked about is for the thrust bearing....

Many have done it. The issue is the bearings are Babbitt. Once the grease is displaced, it's like it's not there. The bowl does not get warm enough to drop the oil out of the base. A roller element bearing is a different story.

I did that on 2 berk bowls without any issues... If you do plan on it though, get a center tap an mark the outer facing around the inside o-ring. Berks didn't have a seal clip an pressure could slide the inner seal off.

Mobil1 synthetic.  Great reputation, widely available, and always mentioned in these discussions on jet boat forums.

Mobil 1 is a brand, not type. Use the lithium or the SHC type.

There are quite a few greases available from Mobil.

Great stuff, we use the Chevron stuff at work, same basic stuff.
