Hardin 455
« on: June 08, 2008, 12:28:36 PM »
I picked up a second boat this weekend, It is a 71 Hondo, From the orig. owner.
It has a Hardin 455 Olds. I was wondering if Hardin or Hondo do any oiling upgrades to these motors. It runs super with the hose but I haven't ran it in water yet but it had around 37psi at 1200rpm or so.

I just had my olds built with the restrictors in the mains.  It holds 55 psi @ 1000.  I hope that helps

Yes I learned that with my 425 olds in my other boat, I was thinking that the oiling problem has been around since the olds motor was made, Do you think a builder like hondo or hardin would still install the motor anyway? The guy I bought it from said he had never even heard about it and it was stock, he had bought it from his brother ( who had bought it brand new)and nothing has been done to it. I am not going to rebuild it because it runs to good, I was just thinking after all the problems people have with oil pres.,Their motors Must not be made for marine use. Ill post some pics. today, I paid 750.00 as a second owner and it is in very good cond. I was just going to clean it up and paint it or try to wet sand and fresh clear coat try to make a buck.

I'm not sure, but IMO it probably doesn't have any oil mods.  I would just watch the pressure and try not to ring its neck too long.  Three Rivers?? are you a Lake Kaweah (SP) local?

Cool,
We try to make it up there at least a couple times each summer.  Mostly to fish, but this year we will also be skiing.  We usually stay in the RV resort across from the store

The lake is full now, water is all the way to the first motel, and second ramp and camp ground is closed, on the weekend it takes about an hour to launch, but other than that there maybe 10 min if that. Did you ever try to fish at Case Mt. ponds? Its a catch and release but there are some big fish ( 5 plus 75% of the fish I cought ) It is about a half mile walk from a legal place to park.

Cool,
We mostly bass fish, but I will have to give that a try.  Its good to hear that the lake is full, we catch the sh*t out of the fish when the lake is full like that.
