so like i said here is my oil filter adapter plate. one pic is just the plate the other is of the plate and gasket. as i said before the gasket looks too big. so i wanted to ask you guys for advice before i starve my motor of oil

ya that is the only gasket that comes close to fitting so i am guessing it goes there. i just dont want to error when it comes to the oiling system.

that is what i was thinking. i dont think there is even a groove on my adapter plate for an o ring type gasket. but i will double check

I had a similar problem , same area... i used black rtv gasket maker just around the outer edges.
HDriderTH is correct that is a bypass some people plug it for racing applications but i wouldnt..

i can take antother pic if need be. but it looks like a male threaded bung that the oil filter would screw into. that is about it.

i figured that might be a bypass since there is no matching port on the enging block. it seems to be just another passage for oil to or from the filter.

i will post some more pics of the plate after work..

Greg thats a standard chevy oil filter adapter for a chevrolet engine, came on all small block and big block engines from 68?-90 I belive(with the exception of the ones with oil coolers).

so all i have to do is put a little silycone around the edges. Does the oil filter press against the block anyway. i dont think it would even matter if this plate leaked. it fits up inside the block a bit and it looks like when you screw the oil filter on it seats against a ledge on the block. so why does this even need a gasket..

That was the right gasket.  The part you think is a bypass is the bypass.  Oil comes in from that hole in the block, goes thru the filter and up thru the middle of the threaded part.  You wouldn't have to trim it around the bypass opening either.  I took that bypass piece out of mine, tapped it and stuck a 1/4 pipe allen head plug in it.  Have to make sure you don't go too long between oil changes and dont use a cheap filter, then all the oil goes thru the filter and none bypasses it. 

correct....this is the bypass and yes I always plug them in warmer climates when its cool out and you start your chevy it is not filtering oil till it warms enough to flow well plugging the  bypass does require a little more maintenence of the oil and most quality oil filters are fine will not pose problems the chinese oil filters are bad......but think about it where does the pickup sit in the pan.....1/4 inch off the sump where do you think all the metal goes when you shut down and when you restart after setting all the metal most cant be seen without magnfying glass or magnet but it is there normal part of engine wear, it gets pumped back thru the motor if you choose to plug the bypass just let it get some heat in it till you hit the throttle hard and you will be fine

i talked to my motor guy yesterday and he said not to even worry about the gasket. he said i could plug the bypass if i wanted but since i dont exactly have a race boat it will be fine the way it is..

what do you guys think about that. i am planning on just bolting it up today.
