Would the serial number on the engine tell the horse power? The boat is a 87 .

Serial number startsH20 and ends in 406 just wondering if it could be a 400 hp engine. And that would be fine  for me im new to the jet boat world.

It's most likely a standard 330 horse deal. That was the most common in those boat if its the original motor. The numbers in your pic are most likely machinist numbers which tells me its been rebuilt or gone thru at some point.

I have heard that there were also 405 hp  , 420hp , 435hp made in those days. The 405 hp came with 6 qt oil pan and the lower and higher hp engines where built 10 qt pans , the higher hp were  off shore boat engines.
