Quadrajet carb question

I have a 76' Cobrajet with a chevy 350, jet drive in it. It has a Rochester quadrajet, if I were to replace it with another quadrajet, do I have to get the exact same model number?

Any suggestions to replace it with something else? It works now but it is filthy and probably needs a rebuild. I heard Edelbrocks are easier clean and maintain.

What do you think?

ok this is just an oppion! but i have owned but and liked neither! holley is the way to go.but out of the 2 ed carb is better than the other!

The Quadrajet is a great carburetor for a small Chevy. Easy to tune, plenty of CFM and good driveability.

The problem you are going to run in to is with mounting the Holley, not impossible or even difficult, but you will have to buy a spread bore to square bore adapter not to mention mess with the fuel line and the hassle of getting it tuned correctly.

If it were mine, I would stay with the Q-Jet. Maybe even a Carter AFB which then was bought by Weber, then to Edelcrock, the problem is you will need to buy a strip kit to fatten it up enough to run right so you run in to the tune problems again.

It may be worth your time to have it rebuilt by a reputable shop or give it a shot yourself....

well gt is correct! about when they run well they do really great... but when they fail its alot of money to get them rebuilt . cause anyone can rebuild a carb but quadrajets are really touchy!!! and if there not perfect it wont work right at all! if i was going to put a holley on my 350 a 600 is all you need.the model is a 4160.

But the Q-Jet he has now is more than likely a 750 CFM carb..... :sly: If it is not a 750 CFM it is an 800.... ;)  The biggest plus about the Q-Jet is the adjustable secondary pull in point and its versatility.  Just my .02c

Not a tough carburetor to rebuild at all, just needs to be stupid clean. :thumbup:

Why would you buy a rebuilt Quad?

A rebuild kit will only run you about $60. If anything I would have yours rebuilt. Any carb shops in your area?

Stay with your original Q jet, find a tech. with experience rebuilding it. Check with your local independent repair shops. I used to bench build those for around 250.00 with kit and float. They are not hard to kit if you know what you are doing. do not buy a rebuilt.

the best thing to do is see if it just worn out. if its not then there is a good chance of having it rebuilt. but if its a big mess then forget it. take a couple picks of it. show us.

How do I know if it is worn out? What is the difference between buying a rebuilt and having mine rebuilt? I submitted a picture before referring to cable hook up, someone said it looked like a car carb, not marine.

You will need to buy a carburetor adapter to get from the spread bore to a square bore, then probably have to jet it.

My reasoning is this....Someone just threw an automotive motor in your boat....... :screwy:

Depending on what year the engine is, I would also consider advancing the Cam timing about 2* and run the timing pretty hot (like in the neighborhood of 36*BTDC)...

It will wake it right up....

You "could" get it to work, but you will struggle with that automotive Q-jet. It was my assumption that this was a marine OEM dealio....My bad. :P

Looks like a pre '73 , w/ turbo 350 trans linkage. If its running O.K., leave it be, very tough carb. In ya want to upgrade, 650 holley (vac. sec., no spring, no bb, no choke) is an easy carb to tune or repair on the water.

The number off the body is  7045583.......Trying to start motor after complete strip/rebuild of boat. Trying to see if the motor will siphon from a gas jug, no luck. Shouldn't the mechanical pump be pulling fuel through the line or might the jug be too high (sitting on the floor, 8+ inches higher than the pickup in the tank). Just trying to aviod putting a lot of fuel in the tank for know knows how long.
