Header Decibels
« on: April 03, 2009, 08:16:50 PM »
Ok so here goes guys.. My first post and sorry for no pics yet.. New computer and haven't got to it yet... I have basset headers and was wondering what decibel reading I would be looking at... My state has a noise limit of 90 DBs at idle... Think I'll fail and if so I would like some thoughts..

What about inserts.. i have seen some from Rex and CP Performance that claim a 10 DB drop.. How are they on  affecting performance.. It is a blue oval and we need all the performance we can get.. ;D

FWIW I'm not using mine either, Jeremy. ;) Call it a protest.......that'll cost me alot in fines eventually I'm sure. Lakes around here want 88 or 89 decibels. dunno if that's at idle or not tho. Eventually I'll conform, maybe, possibly, who knows. >:D

90db is what the USCG says.  Open headers won't make your boat faster, just noisier, thereby drawing more attention to you and with your paint scheme, I think you have that covered :)

You guys are brutal!  :D

FWIW I had Bassetts on my 468 Chevy and with the insert mufflers it was not even close to legal, I made some adapters for Super Trapps and used the 4" baffles along with the insert mufflers and installed 36 baffles per side, got it down to 87db and took off approx. 300 Top end RPM, Ironically the same RPM and sound level the same motor made in a boat with thru transom logs/snails with the same build jet pump :screwy:

I still have the same boat and motor, but sold the Bassetts, now going to install logs (thanks blownmiller) and OT pipes and some Borla's (being made right now).

A few years back I was so obsessed by this "issue"  I bought a Pro Decible meter and tested damn near everything ! you will be surprised , My wifes F150 with flowmaster wouldn't pass most state boat laws , to tired for more tonite , more mannana~ Tom
This is a Led Zep "Rift" at part volume from my office stereo  this  is the legal limit for open OT headers in most states :D

Funny thing about those decibel meters is this, and I don't know if the rangers know this or not. In my former life, I was a District Manager for Radio Shack, and one of my stores sold 250 of them to the Ohio Highway Patrol so they could issue tickets to these 'subwoofer' freaks. What they didn't know was they need to be recalibrated like at least every year. Neither did I. Every year that store had huge sales in July because of the recalibration repair costs, about $55 a unit back then. And they bought more every time, talk about repeat business!

If they didn't, and didn't have the documentation that it was done, tickets would be tossed out of court.

Just a little fact about those meters. And I beleive it needs to be read at like an 80 foot distance, no?

Si. 80 feet.

They also had to be trained and all use the same meter (looks like the model Tommy has there), I use the one for my work and it has a calibration transmitter with it, this is like a $2500 meter, and it read louder than the one Ranger Rick used...

Most noise laws state a maximum Db at "X" number of feet.

Most roundy round tracks tried to keep us to 100Db at 100'.  The Pro4 car with the Olds Quad4 was always being harassed about being too loud  ::)
