Title: Header gasket/ exhaust leak?
Post by: drogers87 on May 10, 2017, 04:36:04 PM
Well... I went looking for a problem and may have found one. Unnoticed a black spot on the carpet inside the engine cover.  Not remembering that in the past, looked below on the logs and found a black "spray" mark on the front port between the head and manifold. Looks like the gasket got a little black and possibly exhaust leaking out?

Just had the heads gone through 10 months ago, fresh gaskets etc...

Serious? Maybe a new gasket and a little extra liquid gasket? I'm open to ideas

Dan

I have never used a gasket on logs.

Ultra Black RTV and let it dry for a good while. even over night, before puting it back on.

Check the header flange for any warping.

Always re-torque after a hot/cold cycle.

Use copper RTV. No gasket.

Thanks for the replies! Rtv it is. See any problem running like this? Trying to figure if I can get the log off and fixed before the next trip...

Do yourself a favor and fix it before the next trip, that al-u-minium is pretty soft and WILL just eat out more.

it's eight ( 8 ) bolts and a hose clamp. maybe 2 hose clamps. Nike- Just do it.

I just put in copper gaskets. Took me 30 mins and did it at the river in the morning before going on the water.

Ultra black is the best.

Thanks again for the help guys, I really appreciate it. Sounds simpler than I was imagining. Going to get it done this weekend!

Took the headers off and saw a little valley on the face of the header. Not sure how that surface gets worn. Looks like the mechanics that installed the header added a little extra liquid gasket to compensate.

I'm guessing a little extra rtv will do the trick unless someone wiser than me thinks otherwise... I guess we will see if that holds. Thanks again for the help all.
