HEI  all the way!! The advantage of them is that you drop them in and don't mess with them. They are pretty reliable and they hook up with one wire, 2 if you are using a tach. Every auto parts house in the country has the coil for them. They are big but worth it!

If a closed engine, I would run the Pertronics with the Rev limiter and adjustable advance built in.

They make a marine version.

Stay away from the Chinese crap, you don't need that kind of aggravation.

DUI of you must go hei.

Grain of salt this.

POINTS SUCK!  Lol

Literally the only thing good about points is you can pretty much get the engine to run no matter what.

A points ignition system is good for about 35,000 volts and that drops as rpm goes up.

HEI is good for about 75,000 volts and it drops off very little at upper rpm.

So there. Lol

Check the number on your points distributor and get on Pertronix Web site and see if they make a conversion kit for it. They really are pretty cool.

X2

While you are on the Pertronix website, see if this will work for your application.  You will need a compatible coil.  Sorry I can't tell you what that means.  The coil you have might be compatible though.

Yeah points suck all the way around, the HEI is a good bang for the buck on a budget for something not real high performance. When I bought my boat as a project it actually had a Petronix billet dist. in the origional engine. It looked pretty nice and I decided to keep it and use it with the new engine I built, it shit on me twice and I went to them in San Dimas Ca. and had them test it, they said nothing was wrong with it, so I installed it again and took the boat out, it shit again, lost fire with no spark. I got rid of that POS and bought an entire MSD marine system and never looked back, it has run great ever since. I personally have never had any problems with MSD products in over 25 years, I have the 6A in my 11 sec. Chevelle, the 7AL in my alcohol dragster and now in my boat, couldn't be happier.

What are the advantages of an msd over and HEI ingnition? Right now I have an hei set up on my chevy 454 with vacuum advance. It was that way when I bought the boat. It runs good but don't know if I should spend the extra coin for and msd setup and what the advantages are.

Hei is one of the best ignitions ever made! That being said really the only advantage to an msd or Mallory system is the adjustability, for red line and advancing.  If your motor is mainly stock you'll never notice a difference, and be waisting your money. Just my opinion

MSD stands for multiple spark discharge, they are designed to deliver spark for 20 deg. of crank rotation at any rpm. In the higher rpm ranges there is not enough time for individual sparks, so one continious flow of energy bridges the plug gap, ensuring that the flame front stays lit. A factory system is a one hit wonder, I too think the GM HEI is a good ign. system, but it has it's limits. To begin it's classified as an inductive system, the coil is solely responsible to reach saturation before the collapse of the field to deliver the voltage to the correct plug. As rpm increases the time for full saturation becomes less thus so does output. MSD and alike systems are classified as capacitive discharge systems, they have that box, it stores allot of energy to keep the coil saturated at any rpm so their won't be a voltage drop at the plugs in the higher rpm ranges. I have dynoed engines with both styles of ignition systems and there is always more power made with an MSD system. Remember power is made from one thing, the extraction and management of the fuels energy, if any amount of fuel that is not burned during the combustion process, is lost power at the crank. HEI can produce up to 50,000 volts, but in the higher rpm and load ranges that will drop off fast, as a racer and engine builder for making power, better fuel mileage, easier starting, more stable idle the MSD ignition is superior...
