Title: help no power at dist.
Post by: smb123 on February 15, 2015, 07:08:56 PM
Hi guys we dropped a motor in today and went to fire it up. We have power at the distribution block but no power to the dist.  The motor turns over and theirs power to the fuel pump. Any ideas of what's going on would be great.   We did put a correct  cap on the dist.

What? The distributor grounds the negative side of the coil. No power unless the points are open. No points, then what are we working on?

So what you mean is, no spark.

Help us to help you.

It's an hei idk if that matters but from the breaker/distribution block at the back of the engine theirs no power leading into the dist. From the block we cranked the engine over and hooked up a fuse Testor and nothing but everything else is working

It could be the module??  As far as the 12 volts goes the dist. Isn't getting any power at all we even tried to jump it right from the battery to the hot lead of the dist and it still wouldn't fire

You check things over like ground . Why is there no power to the distributor?  Could be the module but that would be last on my list.

Okay thank you  will check the grounds today, we're also going to jump past the breaker and see if the issue is in the breaker itself

We haven't checked the firing order yet since we're not getting any power to the distributor for spark

Have you disconnected the tach. lead?

Is the distributor turning?

GT

EDIT; also jump from the body of the distributor to a known good ground.

MMMMkay?

Okay will do we just disconnected the tach and ran a hot lead to the dist. And still no spark. When we ran a hot lead to the dist wire at the breaker it turned on the fuel pump which is on the same spot on the breaker as the fuel pump

UHM dude?

If the rotor does not turn, what triggers it to spark? I hope you misread my post..................  :sly:

You said you replaced the cap, did you use the right button?

I need pictures. Just to see what you have sitting in the background.  ;D

I'm not sure, we have no power leading into the dist. somethings not right with the wiring. How do I post pics.  Sorry for the newb question. Also we used all the same stuff that came in the kit from summit for the correct cap we just reused the coil

This is where you are losing me by 5,000%......

You said you "JUMPERED STRAIGHT FROM THE BATTERY TO THE POWER POLE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR". Do you see my problem?

Slow down, you will go faster. Jump the body of the distributor to a good ground and hit the key again. make sure the rotor turns when the engine does.

This is not rocket science...

Update thanks for all the help guys, after figuring out the wiring and the dist turns out it was the corrected cap that hept it from running
