Title: Help with odd engine noise

New to jet boats so i apologize in advance for any stupid questions... I got this boat 2 weeks ago and it started fine and ran before I made the purchase from the seller.. The seller got it on a trade and couldn't tell me much about the motor, thinking that buying the boat without that info may have been a bad idea... Anyway, got the boat home and went to start he boat and the starter was not engaging the flex plate... Replaced the starter ands got it shimmed the best I could and it started fine.. Got out to the lake and was about 3/4 of the way around and hit a wake and the butter flys on the air scoop closed and killed the motor... Went to start the motor again and got this horrible metal on metal screeching sound a sound like a bell was being hit from the back of the motor... My buddy and I figure it was the starter again but when unfit home and was reading topics in the internet I found it may be the flex plate is cracked causing the starter to not be shimmed correctly... Any help would be greatly appreciated

without hearing the noise. Going out on a limb here...

But if the flexplate is cracked, you could have effed the gear up on the starter or thrown the alignment off when you hit the wake and next time you tried to start it you could have stripped the gear....

Id replace the flexplate. Inspect the starter and replace if necessary.

Can always try to roll it over by hand with a socket to see if its locked up or anyhting

Is there an inspection cover ??? So you can look at the flex plate??? But that is what it's sounding like??

I'm going to be pulling the rear engine cover off today and inspect the flex plate and check the starter alignment... Does anyone have a link or know the torques for the flex plate and U-joint going to the impeller? I don't have a manual... It's a Hardin marine 454bbc

tight enough so they dont come out....... lol sorry i know not much help. If i had to guess i would say 50-60 ft lbs. I just use a 3/8 impact personally

Shims on the starter.... I removed the shims on the starter and the noise went away and the motor now turns over fine... Not sure why it turned over fine before I went out on the lake and then decided to give me issues afterward

Do you have "true" starter bolts holding the starter on? If not the next time it kicks the starter a little you will be right back in the same boat? No fun intended... 😎

True starter bolts??? I didn't know there were starter specific bolts...

The bolts should have a knurl to center the starter correctly.

That makes big difference.  Been there done that and it sucks cus i have to pull my motor out to change starter/bolts.  You can get a variety pack at autozone.

I thank god all I have to remove is the exhaust to remove the starter

Starter bolts are a must. Everyone learns the hardway with this one. I did.
