Title: Here we go again!
Post by: bubblin_hallett on July 15, 2015, 08:54:28 PM
Well sold the hallett because of the unknown olds in it! Bought a mini day (the 77 eliminator on here that was for sale) and went to time it today and it had a dead hole! Dad took the valve covers off to find rockers were tight but some weren't moving! Tore it down farther to find bad lifters and rounded camshaft! (7 lobes) time to pull it and check the bearings! Any suggestions on a good Lopey cam for a 454?

Alot of cam options but I always like the 6272989 cam for stock 454.

I'm not sure what you are gonna do with the motor.   Or what RPM it turns.  Does it have stock heads?  Did you even get to see what RPM it turned?  Im a believer in Torque is king so dont go to big on the cam get one which powerband matches your Target RPMs

Oh thats an old GM number but Im sure comp and crane have something thats a match.  Its pretty mild but you can search for one to match powerband.  Remember this rule of thumb the guy who picks cam that is just too much cam for his motor is dissapointed.  The guy that went conservative would like a lil more.  You dont want a cam to make power at 4500-6500 when your boat only turns 5000 max.  A motor that pulls hard will always bring smiles even if it isnt the fastest and in a stock motor mild will be the best money spent IMO.
Id look for 1500-4500 something like that

Have you thought about putting a roller cam and lifter in it

How much bottom end does one need?

From JBP hp chart, 'A' Impeller :

RPM     Horsepower     Torque-FT-LBs
1000                     3.58          18.78
1100                     4.76          22.73
1200                     6.18          27.05
1300                     7.86          31.74
1400                     9.82          36.82
1500                   12.08          42.26
1600                   14.65          48.09
1700                   17.58          54.28
1800                   20.87          60.86
1900                   24.54          67.81
2000                   28.62          75.13
2100                   33.13          82.84
2200                   38.10          90.91
2300                   43.53          99.36
2400                   49.46         108.19
2500                 55.90              117.40

Stock heads are capable of 500+ HP.
Not all stock heads are capable of that, though.

'A' Impeller, Peanut port heads & headers, 9.5:1, 292AH cam, 5200 rpm. 71.8 mph, ~503 hp

Have you thought about putting a roller cam and lifter in it

Well we just decided to buy another motor and rebuild the other one slowly! Almost ready to drop just a few more little things!
