Title: hey turbo guys, ??? for you
Post by: FORKEDUP on October 01, 2008, 09:17:20 PM
anyone ever heard of ray jay turbos? what are they, any good, not going to be used in a high horsepower deal, more of just a family cruiser with a little balls, i don't know squat about turbos, so any help would be great, they are freshly rebuilt with a receipt from local turbo shop.
                  Thanks in advance as always

The one on my bug was on it when I got it, Rayjay turboes I think are like the Airesearch units from airplanes (like Cessna's and Beachcrafts), the one I had was really small but made like 10 PSI at wide open throttle, the wastegate would come in too hard and make a wicked whistle, pretty fun...

not sure which models, i will have to find that part out,  he claims he was seeing 15 lbs of boost, and as gt said, looks like they are from aircraft, all i can find talks about them being in planes

I had two Rayjay hb196's, never thought they would work good in a low rpm boat, but like any company they make lots of different turbos

Well an f-250 and these old Ray-jays are a little diffrent . From what I was told , Ray-Jays have been bought and sold and changed names about 5-6 times . Of all the names they have been , Ray-Jays seem to be the hardest to get parts for if at all . My set-up is good for about 8 lbs without wastgates either . BDS says O-ringing the heads isnt really needed till about then anyways . 8lbs doesnt seem like alot but N8's Eliminator with a 496 and my exact system made 720 hp and 8 hundred sumthin torque . Not too shabby I'd say , even through a single 830 carb and log manifolds  ;D
