Title: high compression vs blower vs turbo motors vs nos
Post by: surfaholic on September 01, 2012, 10:52:54 PM
What's ur pick a n/a high compression motor, a stocker with nos, a low compression blower motor or a turbo motor, must run pump gas and no fuel injection.

Big stroker with moderate compression if you need to stay with pump gas.  ;)

Nitrous Oxide on a boat is just silly....

Blowers and turbos are fun, but expensive and attention hungry.

Large cubic inches that make their power at lower RPM not only are less expensive to build, they run more quietly and can stay relatively stock as far as peripherals (oil system, induction, exhaust, carburetion, etc...)..

My vote is for a thumper... ;)

BTW, is E85 still considered "pump gas"?  :sly:

i grew up with high compression flatbottoms, and then later a high cube blown motor.  the high comp motor was always high rev'ed, fly by the seat of your pants.

the blower motor was just sooooo well rounded. made power everywhere and slapped in front of an art carr t400 it was extreeeemely versatile.  skiing, cruising, putting thru channels, or blowin doors off of other boats. it required little attention other than just changing the oil and putting in more gas. we only broke once and it was a cam chain, nothing directly related to the blower itself.

i couldnt imagine have turbos in a boat that i wanted to use all the time.

I've been pondering a blown sbc for the next boat. Nothing wrong with big cubes just looking to save a little money.

In my jet just a mountain motor. If I had a vdrive cruiser(one day I will) it will be forced induction.

Low compression with boost of your choice. I like my Procharger although you cannot run nitrous with it. A roots blower you can run nitrous and double up on the fun.

Yes it costs alot, but why not enjoy your money. I'm mechanically inclined so most of my stuff I put together myself. The only thing I paid someone else to do was the short block. I supllied all of the parts. Labor costs are high for those that know what their doing.

Why would you make a statement like that?

I personally ran a 505 cubic inch turbo engine in a 20 foot Schiada that was used for ski racing (both marathons and sprints), as well as being used for weekends at Parker.  Granted, it was not a pump gas engine,, ran 15 lbs boost, but it was completely trouble free for 6 years until I finally sold the boat.  The boat was sold less engine, and I freshened up the engine before I sold it, but was amazed to see that nothing actually needed replacement,,, rings and bearings would have continued to run for a long time.

Back to the original question, you would not run a "high compression" engine on pump gas and expect good results.  You need to decide what is most important to you, power or budget.  Forced induction engines will cost considerably more (mostly due to the added cost of blower or turbos), but set up properly they should be completely reliable and yield more power.

I say how deep are your pockets that decides the engine

That's why I'm in a budget boat currently. :-)
