I have a Holley list 9029, 4150 series marine carb that appears to be leaking from the idle adjustment needle seals and primary pump diaphragm. Can these be replaced by themselves or do I need a rebuild? The carb seams to work fine, it just leaks when the engine is off. I've never messed with a carb before, i usually just take em off and have them rebuilt but if I can just replace these parts i'll give it a shot.
Thanks,
James

you might as well buy a rebuild kit, it'll come with the seal. chances are if those are dry everything else is too. its just a little cork deal...

I figured :( might as well get it rebuilt, no point in wasting $40 for a band aid fix. I've taken all my carbs to a shop in El Monte but they Quoted $180 for the Holley over the phone. Sound right? all my other carbs (Edelbrock & Quadra jets) were $130 ???
-
For a couple more bucks you can he a new refurbished one. ;)

If your not in a huge hurry I'll rebuild it for you. I'll be back in SoCal (Redlands area) Sunday late. I'll do it for 40. Plus the cost if the kit. I can get a quote for the kit before you decide. Anyway, it'll take a couple days to get it apart, dipped and cleaned. Then just a short time to reassemble.

Okay, Please don't laugh but I have not clue as to what I'm looking at :-[
I've taken my carb off of the manifold and am trying to drain the fuel. On my Edelbrock I just moved the linkage until all the fuel squirted out and I was done. Moving the linkage on the Holley only squirts fuel out of the primary, the secondaries do not move at all. Is there suppose to be any linkage that attaches the two? Also if I move the secondaries by hand no fuel squirts out??? Now I've never even looked down a Holley let alone own one but I can't find the jets for the secondaries??? The only items I've removed have been the throttle cable and spring. I have taken some photos of the sides and top. Looking up the List# 9029 tell me this carb should be a 715CFM with mechanical secondaries. Can someone be kind enough to tell me what I'm missing or if I'm doing something wrong :-[
Thank you in advance,
James

You have a vac sec carb there. If u want to drain it just turn it upside down. The primary and secondary jets are in the metering blocks, same blocks where the idle mix screws are. Take off the float bowls and youll see the jets...

In fear of sounding like a complete moron, how are the secondaries vacume? I don't see anywhere to hook up a vacume line, are they pulled open by the intake? Also, another dumb question but why wont the secondary jets spray when the linkage is moved? What are the jets under the phillips screw in the primary?
Thanks,
James

Intake manifold/Engine vac draws the secs open.
They basically open automaticlly, they kind of a b to see if they are opening all the way because u need to watch them while going full speed...
when I went to oriellys in escondido, they a have a rebuild kit for 25-30 bucks, where are u located? Ill rebuild it for 40 and teach u everything u need to know.

That carb has been rebuilt with a non Holley kit previously. I would highly recommend getting a genuine Holley kit, but now you need to get the correct adjusting nut and jam screw for the needle and seat assembly.
What's on there currently can easily cause you to damage the threads for the needle and seat (float adjustment).

X's 2 on the genuine Holley brand rebuild kit.

Do these parts come in the holley renew kits?
Also, just curious, how could you tell it has a non Holley kit?
-
I have had good luck with AED rebuild kits as well. You can tell a holley kits from the packaging. They will have the hardware crewchief was talking about.
Another good part to get are the clear float bowl sight plugs. They make setting the float level easy without spilling gas all over. Moroso and someother companies make them.

1st question = NO
2nd question = I could tell by the Jam nut on top of the float bowl. The original Holley design uses a floating nut to adjust the height of the needle/seat and a flat headed bolt to tighten everything
The aftermarket design uses a slot on the top of the needle/seat and a regular nut to jam everything together. The problem is you can over-tighten the jam nut and pull the threads out of the float bowl
The Holley kits do not come with the nut/jam screw in there kits because these are non wear items and shouldn't need to be replaced.
The good thing is the parts you need are the same on all Holley's that have that type of needle/seat. So, you might be able to find some good used around (unfortunately I don't have any hanging around).
If not you'll probably have to go to a speed shop that carries more than a couple Holley gasket to get the parts you need.

this kit has the hardware you need...

Thanks everyone for all the tips and offers to help. I called the Carb shop back the other day asking if they had the OEM adjusting nuts and jam screws. The guy remembered me from the other day and asked if I was going to bring it in for a re-build and i told him I was expecting a price around $140, not $180. He then responded with "$140 is fine" So I decided to take it in. Got it back yesterday all nice and clean, correct adjusting nuts and jam screws, tuned, W/ a 6 month warranty too
Thanks again guys

Good deal

that thing looks bitchin. hopefully it runs like a champ now. did he happen to jet it and power valve it to your application?

I told him just to match whatever was in there (been running great for years) but if after he had it apart and felt he could improve then have at it. I didn't get to talk to him when it was done, I had my wife pick it up while I was at work.
New problen though, he gave her two gaskets, one for carb to adapter and a 1/4" thick one for adapter to manifold. Well, the 1/4" one does not work on my manifold. The manifold has two bolt sized holes at the front and a grove cut out where exhaust passes through. The gasket does not cover theses holes well. Scared the crap outta me when i felt air blowing OUT from under the carb. Where can I get this gasket at? Ive already been to auto zone and kragen but so far can only find the one that he gave me and I threw the old one out so now I can't match it up :banghead:

Here is a picture of the manifold:

And here is a picture of the gasket, you can see in the pic it does not cover the hole completely.
[attach=2]
After a bit of research the gasket that was given to me is for a 350 not a 454 :banghead: I talked to the wife and apparently the guy I talked to was out to lunch when she picked it up. She said some kid grabbed that gasket for her after she told him I had an adapter plate  I'm pretty sure he will give me the correct one if I go back but I need this done by Monday and the shop is only open while I'm at work. Does that gasket have to be 1/4" thick? can I just get a standard Q-jet gasket and cut the spread bore part out?
-
Looks like you need a new manifold. I have an edelbrock performer rpm air gap coated with endurashine. Thale manifold looks like its polished. Hit me up if you are interested. $250

Thanks for the offer, and i do plan on changing the manifold eventually but i need this boat ready to go by the end of Monday.
There has to be something out there, I know this because there was a nice thick gasket on there that covered those ports perfectly, but I threw it away  hopefully someone knows...

maybe its just me but that is a quadrajet manifold and you have a 4150 carb. two different configurations...

you need the correct manifold for your carb... the primaries on your carb will probably work but the secondaries wont.

I know it's best to match the carb to the manifold but this is how my dad set it up. Holley->Adapter->Manifold.
Why wont the secondaries work? This is how the boat has been since the 1980's without issue.
-
As long as you have the correct adapter you won't have any problems using that carb on that manifold.
You need to take the pic of the manfold and the spacer to a old school auto parts store (not autozone/o'reilly), and find someone willing to search for the right gasket for you.

Ahh an adapter. Gotcha.

Thanks again for the tips guys, I finally got it resolved. Crewchief, I know a carb shop would be the best but all the shops are only open while I'm at work and I'm in a pinch and needed it done by Tomorrow. The problem was the adapter I had on there did not have enough "meat" on the driver's side to cover the hole. I went to a different Autozone today and found a Spectre adapter that was flared out right where the port was. Got it on the intake and it lines up perfect. I know Spectre isn't the best but it will get the job done untill I can find and fit in the budget a good used intake for a Holley.
