I went to start the new motor saturday and it wont start. I have no experiance on Holly carbs. It is a 3310 and it squirts gas at the top when at full throttle but it wont start and bone dry insde intake. float levels are perfect. Fuel pressure from electric fuel pump is 4psi and sometimes 3psi. Kinda low but it should still start and idle. Squirt either in it and it fires right up. Is this enough fuel pressure to start and idle at least or does anyone think it is the carb? I just had it overhauled about 6 months ago and have not ran it til now. Any suggestions please... I am stumpped... :banghead:

Fuel pressure is a little low but should allow it to start and idle.
If you operate the linkage can you see fuel squirt out of the discharge nozzle?
It is a 3310 and it squirts gas at the top when at full throttle
You should be getting fuel from the nozzle with only slight movement of the linkage.
NOTE: Do not use any more either on that new engine!

Is it backfiring or anything weird? I agree, keep the ether away from it!
If the carb is spitting fuel when you look down it's throats then you run it manually, I would guess timing is way off. Either Dizzy timing (Could be 180* out), or cam timing, which is another one I ran into........BBC Keyways are NOT a timing mark.......just an FYI and saw this first hand more than once and very recently. The BBC crank keyway at #1 TDC should be roughly 45* clockwise from straight up............Timing marks on these double rollers can be very confusing if you're not familiar with them.
Anyways, good luck with it, but I doubt it's your carb. Save the ether for gassing the old lady or something productive with it tho! >:D

It starts even if you pour a little gas in the carb. I dont think its timing or dist, out of time either. It is a carb problem i think. It was rebuilt about 6 months ago so that might have something to do with it since it was sitting in the AZ heat in the garage at the end of last summer till now. The accellerator pump starts moving as soon as the linkage is moved.

Have you tired adjusting the mixture screws. Turn all the way in then about 2.5 turns out is a starting point. Are you sure you have the floats set to where fuel just trickles out of the float bowl screws. Even if your accel pump shot is weak it should still run, a poorly adjusted accel pump shot has nothing to do with starting. It is just enrichment where the jets cannot keep up. I always ran my Holleys at 6psi from idle to WOT and never had a problem with them.

Tap on the front fuel bowl. The needle must be sticking. If it starts with either and dumping some fuel down
the carb then you must not be pumping anything with the acc pump which = no fuel reaching the bowl.
You can have 14 pounds of fuel pressure but if the needle sticks.... she isn't doing anything.

No disrespect TJ, but Holley recommends 1.5 turns out as a starting point

I set the mixture screws at 1.5 turns and turned up to 2 and still nothing. I opened the float screws and no fuel trickled out but i you just barely shake boat and gas comes out. I also think the needles must be stuck. I konw this has nothing to do with but here is a recent pic. I took the carb off today and I guess will remove the bowls and check the needles.

I stand corrected yes 1.5 turns. I am uses to EFI.

Uh..ONE turn. make sure your throttle blades are cracked open (idle screw) They'll run 45* out on the cam huh Ray? Just a little noisey.

How would the idle air adjustment have anything to do with his situation?
If he dumps gas in it starts, either, it starts.
If he pumps his acc pump it should then start. It doesn't. No fuel in the bowl or his pump is totally plugged.
I would bet the needle and seat hung up. Idle air screws won't do anything for you till it IS running.
The acc pump is what will give you that fuel priming shot.
Playing with the idle air screws was just a BAD idea and serves no porpose other than to create another issue.
Sorry to disagree with you guys but...

i know when i got my boat the gas was old and gummy so the accelerator needle got stuck in my holley and the motor didnt wanna start.. my fuel pressure is also at 7 psi.. it never really wanted to start if it was lower then 4psi..

just to be on the safe side you may also want to see if that little filter in the inlet of that carb, is not clogged! not all carb shops look at that simple stuff!!!! :banghead:

The carb was plated silver and black, Gas made the silver and black plating come off and clog all the ports in fuel bowls. It came with the boat already plated and the guy I bought boat from said he had it plated but never ran it cause enging sucked water on his last trip out. I got another Holley and it fired right up and I did the break in and set timing and Idle. A few more small things and I will be ready to hit the water. Yea! I will post picks soon. Thanks everyone for your help and knowledge and no complaints here about nobodys advice. Its all good and I got what I paid for...haha!

nice work getting it sorted out. sucks how its something stupid someone else did trying to make things look "nice" and in the end caused more trouble than it was worth.
-
He probably thought it sucked water but it was probably the raider carb screwing up on him.
Go chargers!
