Need tach for 4.25" hole
« on: February 23, 2017, 07:48:36 AM »
I have a hole in the dash of the crazy eights that is 4.25" in diameter. I had a mechanical tach in it before, but I now have an electronic ignition. Only solution autometer has is for 4 ⅝ hole. Resizing the hole is not an option.

Anyone know of an electronic tach that will fit a 4.25" hole?

You could turn a bezel/bushing, that could install from either the front or back of the dash; making the hole fit any gauge.

Just another idea, since it's flat black it wouldn't be too hard to fill the hole and make it smaller so you could run the 3-3/8 or whatever it is and just touch up the paint. I made a template, cut a circle out of wood and glassed it in one a hole in my dash in the TX. I mean if resizing it bigger is the problem. Technically this is still resizing it lol

That is an option, but I don't have access to the tools to machine out a bezel like that.

It would be impossible to match the faded flat black color....so I would have to repaint the entire boat......for a gauge. Yeah, not an option.

It seems that 4 5/8 is the common universal hole size for larger gauges. Seems likes Jones is the odd duck making a 4 1/4 gauge. I have found that Classic Instraments makes a gauge for a 4 3/8" hole. I would have to resize the hole slightly bigger. The gauge styles they offer in this size are to 'classy' for the crazy eights......so I will be resizing the hole to 4 5/8"  :banghead:

Might give them a call and see if they can do a 10k rpm version.

Just some food for thought, the larger you make that hole the weaker it will be. I don't think it would be that hard to blend out a little flat flack and let it fade to match personally if you were to fill it and make it smaller

Ended up with a Autometer Sport-Comp 5" tach which uses a 4 ⅝" hole. I'll have to enlarge the hole a bit. Wasn't what I wanted to do but it'll work.

Didn't have a hole saw that size, but I had a barrel sander. Traced the hole from the packaging then slowly worked the hole bigger. Made a huge mess but it's in there.
