OK, minor flow in my plan. I bought some glenwoods from and rear mounts - they are 26 inches wide, which corresponds to my stinger width (in to in measurement).

I got it lined up, then realized that the entire engine, all 4 mounts, was only going to be supported by bolts going into the stringers at 90 degrees with nothing on top of the stringer to take the force of bouncing etc. My 455's mounts had it at 90 degrees AND over the top of the stringers.

My question is, how critical is that. I am thinking it is pretty essential, and throwing a couple of lag / wood / etc screws, even at 1/2 diameter, isn't going to be enough. I'd love to hear thoughts - I am stalled at this point.

 Here is what I did when I put my BBc in my Nordic. I made plates and welded half pipe on top (half pipe is kind of just for looks.) The feet on the other side as well.

I am not sure on that Speedy. I just put them on there to act as a big washer. The large feet on the other side as well as the plate are pinching the stringer. I imagine this is better than how the factory did it with just washers on the outside. The next move would be a rail kit I guess. IMHO I feel this is strong.

TJ you did an excellent job on that. I'm really impressed with your weld's I am but a novice welder and I can appreciate how hard it is to weld aluminum (or any metal) as clean as this fine example. You guys have got to see Ralph's boat, he really did a job stiffening that sucker up with aluminum. He essentially laddered his stringers with some well placed aluminum plates.

Got the engine mounted today. All day project, that's for sure.

I went ahead and used 3/16 aluminum angle iron with grade 8 bolts, fender washers and nylocks to mount to my stringers. Hopefully it ends up being OK.

3/8 motor plate and 1/4 angle

THAT'S what I was talking about when I said Ralph is serious about his aluminum. Personally I think they did a pretty good job strengthening her up and kept it professional looking at the same time. Not bad for some "backyard hacks." Keep up the good work.

BTW if anyone requires material (steel or aluminum plate) let me know dimensions and I'll take a stroll through our scrap yard. Prices on the material is based on the contractual scrap price our company has with the major smelters of the southland. typically around $.65-$1.70 per pound. We have tons of 7075 T5 aluminum and thousands of tons of steel. I can keep an eye out for other aluminum alloys, we have A LOT of lithium-aluminum used to make the big orange fuel tank on the space shuttle. We make that tank. Not the foam, just the tank...


Totally off subject here.........

We also have 2 M60A3 tank engines-  Continental AVDS-1790-2C 865 hp V-12 engines and Allison CD-850-6/6A powershift crossdrive transmissions. 865BHP @1800rpms 2600lb/ft @1700 out of 24.7 litres-quad turbos. Weighing in at 8000 lbs. Come get 'em we don't even want money for them. They still run, we were gonna use them as generators.

Gee, if I could find about a 47 foot cat to drop those into, it would be perfect :-)

Now, seriously, that would take an a4 impeller, right :-)
