Title: I'm baffled...
Post by: Luckie Stiff on December 04, 2009, 03:46:12 PM: Ok, so anyone that was on my boat this past summer knows the oil out of the breather issues I was having, it wasn't a lot of oil, but mixed with a little water, it was a LOT of mess. At the Avi trip I just put some wrist/sweat bands on them and enjoyed the weekend. Things are calming down around here so today I dove in to see what I could do.

I took the rocker cover off and removed the breather, then I put it back on and saw the issue instantly, a set rockers & pushrods on each side was directly beneath the breather. Not good.

I pulled it back off and began to think of something to fix it.

I called a few places in town, seems everyone had them in stock, $14.95 a pair. F@%k that, I have way more time than money right now so I went up to my buddy's hotrod shop. We found a test strip of some louvers he had done for a guy's hood. Score! I headed back home and began fiddle focking around with my score.

Bulit the first one in 2 hours, the second one in 10 minutes :screwy:

It's not a big deal, my boat has killer oil pressure and it flings it like mad in the rocker cover, it's got to go somewhere, it found my vent and oiled my boat down. I'll keep you posted on how it works...

Post by: IRRebel on December 04, 2009, 04:44:27 PM: Keep the boat well oiled, I say! Do that routinely with the Moo's oil pan and the green ones leaky dizzy o-ring! Hopefully fix those this winter.

Looks like a good solution though Skip! I hope you used Nylock nuts on those bolts and doused them with loctite!

Skip.... this may be a silly question, but you do have the original foam inside the breather when you run it? If so, I would suggest a leak down test on the engine. There are tons of those old M/T type valve covers with that same moon type breather in that center location that work fine. Gale Banks used to put those on all his turbo engines, most had the M/T milled out and that same breather setup in the center.

We always used a Brillo pad...What can I say?, I'm a cheap focker... :sly:

i once new a guy who built top fuel engines (rip) he would not even allow steel wool in his shop because the strands are so fine and can get into all kinds of shit.

still a bad idea imo

I used s/s pot scrubbers, like institutional kitchens use (like the kitchen where I used to work ;) )

Post by: GT Jets on December 05, 2009, 08:17:04 PM: Just to set the record straight, there are no metal particles coming off a Brillo pad...pretty much indestructable..They are made of continuous spirals of stainless and they don't shed at all...Wool would be just silly, Skip just mis spoke...Scotch Brite = really bad idea, they shed tons of abrasives......

We never used an actual oil filter after break in, we used an Oberg sandwitch filter and all I have ever seen in the screen is a human hair. :thumbup: That is with using the Brillo pads and a chunk of milk screen (brass) in the breathers.
