Out of the water started fine but i noticed black smoke. Then i really noticed the smoke when it was in the water cause my exhaust is in the water. Never noticed it at home but maybe just didnt notice it. It didnt feel good at all. It seems to be holding back and wont idle. Im starting to think its a pump issue. As soon as i took it out of the water it starts and sounds great. Brought it home started it again just to see whats up and again sounds great but doesnt feel great in the water

Sorry to hear that. Not sure if the smoke is related to the pump. How sure are you on your carb adjustments/tuning?

Man what a bummer. You are really battling this thing.
Black smoke would make me think of a tuning type issue. Either with the carb or something else. Wouldn't think pump.
Hope it is a simple fix

This video is how it runs out of the water but in the water under load it is not the same.

Does it black smoke at idle as soon as it’s in the water under a load? Does the distributor have vacuum advance? If it does unhook it and re check timing. My guess would be that it’s at a different angle in the water and you have a float set too high and it’s dripping from the boosters while at idle on the water. I would get it in the water and double check carb float levels and reset idle speed and mixture on the water

Also have you checked your idle mixture screws with a vacuum gauge?

Good call. I actually installed one on the dash matching my gauges. Tuning two carbs is a bit harder.
