I have a Ford 460 Big block that I want to install in a jet boat ( i just acquired) problem #1 There are no motor mounts or anything else that goes with mounting the engine onto this fiberglass boat.
Question #1 What is the first thing I need to buy? and where?

I second that, free engine or not it'll be cheaper to buy Chevy parts overall.

you need to go to a marine site or craigslist ford mounting plates. then just install in your boat. its pretty easy. And i know some fast ass fords out there. run what ya got

you have 3 routes:
---3 point mounts *cheapest* ... theres 2 mounts that pivot and rotate, and then a bellhousing that clamps onto the pump itself for alignment. these are usually cheaper.

---typical mounts *good*. plate gets mounted to the front and rear gets small bellhousing that DOESNT mount to the pump. alignment and angle are all set by how the "feet" are bolted to the stringers.

---full plate & rail kit. *best option, most expensive. biggest pain to first install, looks bad ass*
3/8" plate mounted front and rear, pillow blocks bolt plates to rails. rails sandwich load across entire stringer.

Good way to insult people who are only trying to relay their experience(s) to you. You want to put "X" engine in a Jet Boat that nobody knows what it was set up for originally, and you don't have ANY parts - the only reason you want to use the engine you have is because it is free. Good luck, sounds like you'll really need it - oh be sure to piss of the guy at the parts counter too, you get really good deals that way.

Nothing wrong with a ford ! Just to many people worried about spending money... And in reality Chevy shit isn't all that much cheaper... Go price some dart heads... Then price some super cobra jet heads.... Good luck man ! Just keep in mind oil pan clearances and drive line angle. Try to find a four point mount kit, usually get em used for right around 250, or a rail kit would be nice also.

I agree, nothing wrong with a Ford - I drive one everyday. I don't just mean engine parts, this guy has nothing (as I understand it) Chevy logs, mounts and the like are far more common than ones for a BBF. I assumed he was trying to save money by using a free engine, if he wants to spend thousands of dollars on it, he can bring it to ME. LOL
The differences in weight from whatever the boat was designed for can be critical to balance, weight, and center of gravity. A 350 Buick for example weighs in several hundred pounds lighter than a BBF.
I think trying to work around engine "X" and putting into boat "Y" demands a bunch of research, and math. Like I said - Good Luck!~
Edited when I remembered it was the 350 Buick that was the lightest of the iron V-8's

For example, I recently changed from iron heads, and intake to aluminum - only to find out that it changed my center of balance so much that you could no longer pick the tongue of the trailer up. I had to add the weight back with a 2nd battery and a heavy tool box.

You guys that still drink the Bowtie Kool-Aid crack me up. Chevy parts are more common, but new stuff in many cases is NOT cheaper than Ford parts. Paul Kane has posted a link several time to a piece on his website where he outlines in detail 20 different factual, technical reasons why Fords make a better motor for high performance use. I have yet to see anyone post anything substantive to refute what he says. Going into the future maybe the modern LS type stuff will become a superior way to go, but right now, for the kinds of motors being discussed here, until someone shows me different, Ford makes the better choice for a jet boat.
But if you want the best GM architecture to start with, Pontiac walks all over Chevrolet.
Fun fact: the highest recorded torque offered in any production car from GM during the musclecar era was from a Buick. Anybody remember how the big bosses at GM never even wanted to produce a motor over 400 cubes?

If his boat was built with a 460/429 Ford I'd agree wholeheartedly - otherwise I think that is horrible advice (just install in your boat, pretty easy?) My guess is y'all all run in calm water, in straight lines, and power down to make a u-turn to return. Hell of a lot more to setting up a boat than bolting a random engine in it. Hire a test pilot!

Yes he did. I don't have a problem with your response at all. The GM vs. Ford thing never goes away. To your credit and his, he stood his ground and you doubled down on your offer. My beef is with all the Chevy guys who continue to fly the Bowtie flag out of blind, ignorant (sorry but true) beliefs that go back to what their Daddy's drove or some such crap.
I'm kind of a facts based guy. SHOW ME why chevys are better. Paul put up some info that is hard to argue with. I have been waiting since high school for anyone to show me where a 454 is better than a Ford or a Mopar for that matter. Wben you look and rod angles, intake vs. exhaust flow ratios, strength of the cranks and rods, etc. the other guys are just better.
But what do I know? I broke and Olds and replaced it with another Olds. But I bought one almost brand new with forged shortblock, roller rockers etc. for $500 because he wanted to go to a Chevy. I know I'm happy, I wonder if he is?

GC- I'm not saying Chevy is superior, I'm saying you can't just willy-nilly put any engine you want in any hull without giving some regard to what it was designed to use. I didn't get the impression that he wanted to use the 460 because it was a superior jet boat motor (not gonna argue that) but because it was the engine he HAD. That is usually the wrong/hard way to proceed - you won't save money by using a free random engine that you have to scrounge up every marine and jet boat oriented part and system it will need. If you LOVE the engine and want to use it because it is good, do so. BUT if it's an old truck motor you just happen to have around....
I've done a bunch of hybrid automobile and large boat engine swap projects and from my experience you are doing it backwards - though you haven't said anything about the hull, perhaps it came with a 460 and someone stole all the associated hardware?? Either use something very similar to the way the factory set your boat up with OR get a hull that uses a 460. Random hull + random engine= random failure. If you are an engineer and are prepared to figure it all out...forgive all my posts, but you don't sound that way. You said you wanted ADVISE not just directions to do it.

It sounds like the beginnings of one of those projects that will never get finished, which is lucky as it might just kill you if you do.

Just hear out what they are talking about some of these guys have bin in to boats before u were born. If u are a person that doesn't like to hear what people are helping u with then maybe this club isn't right for u. We are a tight family and we will help any body out in their time of need.
