Title: If my dad was here he would tell me what to do!
Post by: RVRPPL on May 16, 2012, 02:13:48 PM
So I blew the motor in my 21' Ultra this weekend. I do not want to try to be the fastest boat on the river I just want to get to where I want to go. I have a couple options on motors but have no clue which direction to go.  On one hand I have the option of a 454, 120 over with pro comp aluminum heads, stainless valves, head springs and cam from Clay smith, Forged pistons, Scat rods, RPM Steel crank and clay smith push rods and roller rockers.  Or should I just get crate motor...and if I do that what do I order? And then I have a 496 that needs to be rebuilt.....who do I take that to and what do I tell them? Im just a girl trying to get back on the river. Help a sista out! :'(

Not knowing much about chevy... I would say sonic test it to see how far over you can go. I would go maybe .60 over and build off that platform. Again i do not know much in the way of a chevy but .120 over seems excessive

yeah from what I have read the pro comp heads are made over seas and yeah they are alumunim but big deal right? So now I have my other option that has been thrown into the mix. Orange engine said they would take my 496 and rebuild it for 1900.00 is that a good deal?

I bought a set of those 3 years ago for my car. Figured 800 for a set of complete heads why not. Took em to a shop had some valve work done and some polishing. 3 years later and I run a consistent 9.8 rocking a bench seat and rally rims on a 3600 pound car. And let's not forget the a/c's on every pass. Damn fire suits are hot. Chinese no, australian yes but put em on a boat? I wouldn't.

I would stay away from the .120 over motor. That is pushing it to the enth degree with a stock 454 block. Personally I'd just have the motor rebuilt  and put it back to stock if you are just looking for reliability.

$1900 to rebuild the 496 might be okay depending on what they are including in that price and if they have a lot of experience with marine engines

x2 I would never touch a motor that is .120 over .60 at the most anything after .60 to me is a boat anchor

The castings for the Pro Comp heads are from a Chinese foundry....Australian company. But that horse is already dead...

If you can get a reputable shop to build the 496 for $1900 and uses name brand parts, forged pistons and "marine" clearances, i would say that would be your best bang for the buck...

However, the only way to tell if it is a "good deal" or not is highly debatable.

What let go in the current motor?

U should get someone who knows marine motors to rebuild it to stock with a nice cam in it, then enjoy the boat for the next ten years.

I would buy the motor with all the HP mods and slap nitrous on it and see what happens.

See I would love to go fast but a 21 ft open bow ultra no matter what I do isnt going to go fast......I want to be able to pile everyone I want into the boat and not have it struggle to get on a plane.....If I wanna go fast I ask a buddy of mine to take e for a spin in his blown daytona.....once a summer usually gets me that speed fix lol. Being that I live on the river my boat gets used 4-5 times a week. I need something that will last.

what do you typically run at on plane?  like my boat i have to usually start up at about 3500, it gets settled in and i can drop down to about 2900-3k.  then i can run there all day long.  just a basic 454 here,

Ever seen what a turbine does to a 21 foot boat?  :screwy:

I am a never say never kind of guy... ;D

IMHO the 496 should do everything you request without flicking parts everywhere and being pretty turn key...

Looks like I am going to rebuild the 496....keep your fingers crossed when it gets torn down. I will keep ya posted.....I guess its a good thing I have my mom's pontoon as a back up on the weekends she is not here! lol

If my 21' ultra threw a rod, i'd have the perfect excuse to do a mild, mild performance build...
