Title: Ignition break up
Post by: aquaholic72 on April 13, 2015, 10:56:06 PM
Alright im chasing my tail over here. Boats back together fires and idles with the new tunnel ram its really responsive  good oil pressure but when i rev it, it breaks up really bad around 4000-4500 like its bouncin off a rev limiter. If u rev it slow and easy itll rev past that but a good half throttle rev it breaks up and freaks the tach and the oil pressure gauge out. I had a new module put in the brand new distributor, swapped the coil, unhooked the tach. Still same shit... any idea's??

What distributor?

Have you watched the timing marks with a timing light?

It almost sounds like fuel.  :sly:

Disconnect the alternator, use a jumper wire from the positive battery post to the ignition coil, ensure you have at least 12 volts going to the ignition circuit.

Ya timing marks are good when i set total. 36 @ 3000 rpm. it has a 105 amp one wire alternator.. same setup as last season. Except the tunnel ram and distributor. Fuels been in it since october, whats screwin with my head is why when it breaks up does it make the tack and oil pressure go crazy..i understand the tach but not the oil pressure gauge..im wonderin now cuz i repainted the engine if it could be my block ground..oh ya and its a procrap distributor..i already had them put a new pickup in it today to be safe..but same result..

It's starting to feel like a loose connection somewhere.

The ground is definitely a possibility.

Start bypassing worth jumpers and take the belt off the alternator.

Seems silly but possible.

Pulled the alt belt , cleaned block ground really good. Has 12.6 volts at the coil running without the alt hooked up and still same thing.. breaks up and the tach and oil pressure gauge
Wig out..

Do you have a  mechanical way to monitor fuel pressure while all this is happening?

I would disconnect everything from the wire harness and run it with a jumper.

Still sounds like fuel though.

has a mechanical gauge right in the y block that splits to both carbs. Stays pretty steady at 6.5 psi. I havent watched it when it breaks up tho. Ill check that tomorrow as well

I would also check float level on the carbs if you haven't already.

I know everyone wants to lean towards fuel and normally id be right there with u guys..but its the oil pressure gauge that keeps me lookin electrical.. its not bouncin alil cuz the engine is studderin. The engine has 50 psi oil at idle and up to 75 in the upper rpm range. All the gauges are electric. When it breaks up the oil gauge starts bouncin from 0 to 75 like its bein grounded out.the tach same thing its not just bouncin at 4500 like its on a 2 step, its all over place..

Have you checked all the connections on the ingnition switch/key? Had a similar problem on a buddys boat ended up being a loose connection on the switch

Wow. I had a pro comp HEI in my old boat and had no issues.but lately I've Ben hearing many negative  stories regarding pro comp. I think I'm done considering purchasing any of their products. Time t O get rid of fuel pump before I have any issues.

I wouldn't use anything from Pro Comp, but didn't want to say anything......

Chinese crap built by the lowest bidder. Pro Comp does not have a factory..... That should tell you something.   :screwy:

Not going to get on the soap box.

But why in the ever loving hell you anyone rep that crap? I would not have even offered to sell that garbage in my shop when I had it.

I guess people will do anything to make a quick buck...

Here is my thinking (then I will hop down off the box).

I am the shop owner... I order the material for stock, keep it in inventory, pay the inventory taxes on it, pay someone to sell it and/or fill the order, take the money, deposit in my bank account, print receipt... Then when it comes back, pay someone to perform the return, box the bitch back up, pay someone to ship it back to the distributor. It cost me money to sell a counterfeit, third world complete piece of shit.....  How is that even sustainable?

Am I the only one that sees it that way?

Glad you got your cash back.

My neighbor purchased a 99 Chevy truck the other day and asked me to take a look at it. It had a check engine light so I ran the code. P1345 cam/crank correlation(timing). First I think, timing chain. But the motor was rebuilt. I take a look at the distributor and it's billet shaft with a red cap. So I pull it and as soon as I can wipe the oil off the shaft the gear falls into the rag. Sure enough.... Pro comp sticker.... Threw in a stock new one and the code is gone and truck runs great

Obviously it comes down to what u can spend.. if procomp right here in so cal offers a complete ignition setup for 2 bills people are gonna order it.. instead of the 6 bills for msd.. and maybe 5 out of 10 people are happy and get a working product.. maybe.. but. All i can say is fuck procomp. I wont get burned by them again..

First time I bought a HEI distributor was a Pro Comp. No issues. So now I'm hooked. But the more I read about problems people are having, the lesser chance there is of me buying anything else.

I have the heads, the shop I got them from made sure to assemble them correctly and did a good valve job on them, and I haven't had any problems. Although, I wouldn't run them on a high hp setup, mine is at abt 7-750, but I wouldn't rely on them much past that

Let me start by saying I 100% agree with you on selling cheap knock off parts.  It's the consumer that's driving this trend.  I can't tell you how many times a week I get asked "what's the cheapest?"  It's these guys that force shops to find the cheapest part available to try and compete.  I wish I could sell Brodix or AFR heads all day but many people don't want to spend the coin when Chinese knock-offs are available.

As for the shops, it's a numbers game.  If they have a 20% failure rate but you're making 80% profit on each unit you're still ahead.  Not how I like to do business because I'm like you... do it once and do it right.  But when the backyard guy on a budget comes in, he's willing to take those odds and risk it.  We do our best to educate the customer but many times it falls on deaf ears or they hop online to find it cheaper.  It's frustrating but goes with the territory.

I think this speaks to the core of what's wrong with our economy and job situation.  Everyone want's to stretch their dollar further without thinking of the long term effect.  I personally haven't set foot in a WalMart in years because I disagree with their business model.  I try my damnedest to find Made in USA on whatever I buy but it's becoming nearly impossible!

Sorry for the soap box thread jack...  guess the pent up frustration comes out when someone mentions the subject... LOL!
