Title: Intake advice
Post by: Hot Shoe on April 18, 2010, 06:58:52 PM
Okay so im not new to building motors but the fire breathing small blocks we put together in my garage to put into anything with wheels is alil different than the 468 thats in my boat. Im not going for all out speed, as much as id love to, my wallet and other projects come before the boat since it already runs n needs nothing virtually. My question is, i have an edelbrock tunnel ram with holley 600s on it and i think its just too much for my application. My motor isnt a krazy build, mild to most and my standards. So would i benifit from moving down to like a victor jr intake with say a demon 850?? Im open to suggestions, I just want a reliable setup that I use to its full ability. With my current setup the highest RPMs i see is 5700, Idk if i really wana push it too much further for reliabilities sake. Anyone else have same setup??

I would look at it like this, does the TR work? Yes- leave it alone. No- Go with a good single plane intake and 850 and you'll love the simplicity of it all. I may be interested in that TR setup should you decide to go with plan B

I really am wanting to go to a simpler single 850 setup but just havent found any good deals on anything n nobody around my parts builds anything that they'd really need a TR. Whatcha thinkn skip?? deal on somthin??

Got the 850 covered,  ;) But honestly, I'd give the tunnel the benefit of the doubt, get some help tuning it, I think you'll be happier both in top end performance and cool factor.

Someone will chime in and contradict that, and no doubt in MY MIND, a single larger carb on w/ good single plane is the best for across the board RPM useage and response. Can even rival the tunnel in top end performance in some cases, but have to be matched and tuned VERY well. (As does any multi carb T/R dealio).

In my limited experience, I find I use all my boats in 5 basic modes. Reverse, idle, maybe 1200 RPM or so in the NWZ, 3500 to cruise with, rarely, and WFO! (Most of the time in open water). Throttle response has little to nothing to do with any of those modes! Unless racing, etc, etc. I'm talking real world, day to day useage. Read my plugs many times with and without the T/R on Moo, and MUCH more even and uniform with it than before it.

Same arguments I've made clear about vacuum vs mechanical secondaries. On the whitewater, circle racing, or fast moving rivers where you're on and off the throttle, steering, trimming, all at the same time, OK, I get it. Milliseconds make seconds. BUT on the lakes or the Colorado? Be hard pressed to show me any appreciable difference. Just my opinion.

Ya i see what you are saying Ray, My carbs are tuned right and this last saturday was the first time in over a year that I've had a problem with them n all it was, was a stuck float. I took her out prob 7 times last year and no problems. Idk i guess i was juss wondering if I would have any significant difference to run a single setup. Idk i guess if a good deal comes my way Id part with it but until then it runs fine n im gona keep it that way, but always open for suggestions haha.
