To hire a dwarf to remove your starter or just pull the engine?? Im kinda confused on which bolts to remove. Its a BBC with a Tilton starter and mounting plate. :banghead:

With the exhaust manifold/header removed you should be able to get it out.
Now getting it back in is another story >:D

I remove the header, unbolt the motor, put a pin in the mount holes on the other side, so it will tilt sideways but not fall off the rail, lift the motor sideways a little and you are there, usually takes about an hour start to finish with beer in the mix :)

I remove the header, unbolt the motor, put a pin in the mount holes on the other side, so it will tilt sideways but not fall off the rail, lift the motor sideways a little and you are there, usually takes about an hour start to finish with beer in the mix :)
This sounds as bad as the Sunbeam Tiger I once owned. You had to pull the motor to change the spark plugs. You could see them but couldn't reach them. That was ok though, my buddy and I use to change out the throw out bearing and clutch plate about every 3 weeks. We got that down to pulling the motor and tranny and doing the replacement and back in in a little over an hour. That included a beer run. :D :D

I'm not a jet boat guru but I've never had a problem changing the starter out with the engine completely in. Take off the exhaust, use ratchet wrenches, put the bolts into the replacement starter before sliding it in where it goes... I must be missing something within this thread.

I agree. It looks a whole lot harder than it really is.

it is possible to remove the starter without touching the motor (at least in my boat), however, i have found (on my boat) it is easier and a lot less hassle to tilt the motor than turn a bolt a 1/4 turn at a time, i am also not a jet boat guru, but i do have alot of experience with taking my boat apart and putting it back together, i merely told him how i did it, maybe and easier way for him, maybe not

I don't think I've replaced only the starter yet on my tunnel hull which should be more similar to your boat than a V bottom. It may not be possible to change the starter on a Chevy in a tunnel hull w/o moving the engine, I do not know.

Erase that, yes I have changed only the starter in my tunnel hull. Still used a ratchet wrench but I distinctively remember it being a much bigger pain in the asss than a V bottom.

It is a Big pain in the ass. More than I expected. I think the 2 bolts underneath the mounting plate for the starter is where it needs to come off but im not sure. Theres only 1 way to find out. oh and the boat is a V. An 18' Eliminator Bubble Deck. I got in a pretty serious motorcycle accident last july and i wasnt able to keep the boat up. So when i went to start getting it ready the starter was working good but the boat wouldnt fire. I figured the gas went bad. Then all of a sudden the jackshaft wont kick out. I think im gonna make a weekend out of it. Thanks for everyones help.

If you had been cranking a lot make sure that the starter drive isn't just stuck in a bind in the flywheel. Tap the starter with a hammer, use a remote start button or hit the key a couple times in a row, if no change you have only lost about 5 minutes.

Yep, you're right.
I've even changed a starter on a Eliminator bubble deck but that one had a Ford and it was easy.

So i got one of the bolts out and struggled getting the other one out. So I whipped out my handy mirror to try to see where the hell the other bolt was and I noticed this little guy behind the ring gear.

It used to be
