Title: JET BBC OIL PAN
Post by: bpizzuto on April 15, 2016, 04:19:00 PM
HEY GUYS! JUST NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOUR OPINIONS ARE ON A BASSETT 14 QT OIL PAN VS A 10 QT OIL PAN. IS THE 14 QT WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY OR EVEN NECESSARY? I HAVE A 468, FORGED PISTONS AND A COMP XM 270H CAM IN FRONT OF A BERKELY PUMP SITTING IN A 76 SANGER. THANKS!

I believe most guys on here run a 10 qt.
pan. I think the super large capacity and dry sump stuff are better suited for offshore and or race boat applications.
Save the money and throw it at set up
'cause you're going to sooner or later anyways !    LOL ...

Two trains of thought.

First,  there are times when 14 quarts would be desirable. Endurance engines are probably the most obvious. Something where the oil will be at operating temp for hours.

Too much oil is difficult to get to temp.

A smaller pan (like a ten quart) tends to have better windage control (just remember,  a 10 quart pan does not hold 10 quarts) and more temperature control as far as warmer quicker, cooler quicker.

It's my opinion that a 14 pan is total overkill and you will have oil system problems because of the lack of temperature control.

Not only that,  but oil changes will cost 40% less with the smaller pan.

Have seen as little as 7 and as much as 9 quarts.

Really depends on what tray and what pan,  then ultimately what rpm.

My Dooley with a Moroso tray likes 9 in the pan. Any more and the temperatures are noticeably higher. Never ran less. It's showing a quart low on the stick.
