Title: LAME...
Post by: LBsuperjet on February 10, 2008, 10:01:23 AM
i went to the swap meet this morning at vets in lb, and bought an HEI distributor for my BBF...come home, go to drop it in, and it hits my tunnelram and doesnt have enough room to go all the way down!...so i guess i cant use a big distributor w/ a tunnelram? do i have to get the smaller one now? are there any HEI small distributors out there? i wish i knew this before... :banghead:

You should have asked .  :D Your gonna have to get the points style . Chevy's sometimes have the same problem . HEI's are renowned for doing this , I didnt know having the dizzy in the right place would also be a problem for the ford's

The wires are snug, but my Ford dist doesn't have a problem fitting.

Reid,
Next time you're @ the LB swap, try and find a guy by the name of Dave Ray,(EDIT: I see he's moved to Nevada, he still does mail order stuff) he runs Dave's Small Body HEI, here's his link
http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/ (http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/) I ran a dual point Mallory on my hotrod for years until I found Dave, he converted my dizzy and it was a whole new ball game! He'll take your old points dizzy and convert it to HEI, same dizzy, same size etc. You won't be disappointed.

Good luck man

I'll give you $50 for the HEI  >:D

I agree, if it was in the right place it wouldn't be a problem - the right place is leaned over in the front so it is out of the way of blowers, manifolds, etc - just like a mopar - it's perfect :-)

Sorry, couldn't resist  >:D

Get the points type distributor and then convert it to magnetic or optical.  The conversion kits are only about $65.00

You can buy what ever you want . I have a points style that I put a crane XR-1 module in . No more points and it works awsome with a built in rev limiter .

Which brand HEI dizzy?  On some, you can remove the large cap AND large diameter cap bass, then install the small cap directly onto the distributor housing.

If you can't do this, then my adivce is to get a FoMoCo Dura-Spark distributor and recurve it.  Best deal electronic Ford dizzy out there for most 460 engine builds.  Where do you think MSD get's their reluctor and magnetic pickup coil? ;)  Dizzy and box can be had for about $50 at a yard, then the recurve kit is $10.

Reid, if you don't want to go the MSD route, you really should give Dave Ray a call, he'll convert your existing dizzy to HEI, they work great, I had one in my 31 coupe, here's his info;

See you @ Ming  ;)
