starter problems

I was wondering if you guys could give me some advise. i have a 468 ci olds thats going on 7 seasons. this year the starter seems to be a little weak when starting. hot or cold. the batterie is fully charged the alternator is 14.2 volts when running. i usually run 10 degrees on timing, to start a little easyer i took 4 degrees out of it!! thats after i took the starter out to have it tested it passed..i also have a ford regulator to help with more amps when starting. engine runs great other then the womp..womp.. when starting..

A ford regulator or Ford aux relay? Sounds like it's either the aux relay, or you have a bad cable/cable connection (Could even be the crimped connection on your battery cables.)

If the battery checks out ok, and the Alt checks out ok, all it can be is wiring (Or the aux solenoid if yer using one). ORRRR the engine is toast and much harder to turn over, but I dun think that's it! lol.

Your timing might be out farther than you think, could have a worn chain or jumped gear.

The womp womp makes me believe its timing

But what do i know............. I have a trailer queen

How did they bench test the starter, I'm betting its toast. Kragen, Checker???

High school kid taught by a high school kid  ;D :banghead:

Is it a Delco deal?, easy to pull apart and verify. Also need to load test the battery from the battery cable ends, you would be amazed at what that will turn up :thumbup:

Can't get a very accurate reading of cranking amps of the starter cranking your engine when they are testing it on a bench.:)  Think all they do is see if it spins. Put it in the boat and have a real shop test the cranking amps and battery condition.

It would pay to do a voltage drop test of the battery cables WHILE CRANKING, to see what condition they are in. Too much drop = slow cranking.

A common term for a Ford starter relay used in conjunction with a GM starter is "slave relay" or even just "starter relay". 30 years in the auto repair business and have NEVER heard the term "aux relay". Is that just some local name?

Similar... Took my Nissan OEM battery to them to test. Charged it, tested, "Its good, must be your alternator". Checked with the dealer. Battery was under warranty still. Did the electrical test, replaced the battery....

Go figure!

Thanks guys for all the new ideas. and yes your right about the 7-11 parts guys, i did take it to a autozone to have it tested. i will proform some of the tests you mentioned.. THANKS MY FREINDS...........

Lol I'm from Ohio, We just called them that because they were used on everything. Even electric forklifts use them.(No starters) You'll find them on any car, including roadgraders, backhoes, etc. In every case, it's to drive yet another relay (Solenoid), which is all it is.
