hi everyone.. noob on the board.. O0
is there anyone setting up LS-1 based engines in boats ?
i have a day cruiser project that needs some love.
any info would be appreciated.

Welcome to the site.
I've been wondering about that also. My buddy is doing a twin turbo LS-1 latter this summer for his race car. I'll be machining the exhaust flanges and some other stuff. They are lite and have a durable bottom end. Gotta beef up the 10 head bolts with aftermarket ones. It mite be the way of the future.
I'll always be stuck in the 60's and 70's !!. ;D Retro rocks!
-
The guy that bought the Southwind from me said he had a LS1 he was going to put in it. He said he had done some research but wasn't able to find anything for the swap. ??? Sounds like all the parts are going to have to be custom made.
-
thanks for the input..
here is the story..
i just picked up a 21 ft mantaray jetboat with a 460 ford..
and since it needs stringers and a floor. im thinking ...i would go for it ..
using the ls-1 out of a wrecked SS camaro i have hanging out.
( first choice if i had to buy.. and had more money ...an LQ9..}
the engine is still in the car so...
im ignorant on the bellhousing and exhaust bolts holes..
are they the same as a first gen small block ? or close ?
if so, a bbc bellhousing might work ?
the current set up uses the three point style mount..
i guess i could make up an adapter style sandwich plate?
i like the idea of the insulated mounts versus the solid motor plates..
except maybe use urethane instead of rubber.
the engine is going to be covered like a newer styled scarab with through the transoms.
im getting older ,so the quieter the better.
thanks for any input.. O0

You might have to make custom headers! The regular small block headers will not fit the ls engines.
-
5 of the bellhousing bolts will line up with a normal SBC/BBC, and you will probably need a PTO made up. Also, the headers may be close to a BBC/BBF/SBF I'm not sure. Also, a custom front mount will need to be made, although front motor plates for cars are readily available if you can make that work.
-
thanks for the input.
i was checking out the bbf logs and the bolt hole spacing looks close.
thanks for the tip on the bellhousing..as long as the four on the dowels match up, it should be good to go..
i wasn't thinking about the pto.. the later ls stuff is different than the first gen sbc stuff.
but,, nothing a tranfer punch and 6 spd flywheel wouldn't fix ?
i wonder on cooling if it will need a restrictor on the oulet ?
i know in a car or truck, they run them pretty hot.. and with the lake being the biggest radiator, be lucky to see 160 deg f. might be a little cool ?
i was reading an older hot rod or chevy hp and dutweiler? had an l92 headed 6 liter ls type with the new magnacharger and they were getting some nice numbers out of it with a conservative tuneup.in the 7's on pump gas.
i cant wait .. no more burned knuckles reading plugs..only down side is dropping the laptop in the water.LOL!
i need to do some home work on this.
thanks for any input.

I don't know for sure if the PTO flange will match up, but they changed just about everything else on them. My cam only LS1 (stock 241 heads) with a fast 90 intake puts about 430 to the tires, and its got 108,000 miles on the clock >:D
Also, they make carbed intakes and even an adapter for a distributor if you don't want your laptop getting wet!!
The only bellhousing bolt that doesn't match up is one of the top two.
I would try to get the temp up, as they come from the factory with a 185 thermostat. If you get it rebuilt and tell the machinist to make the pistons a little extra loose, then I wouldn't worry about it though.

pics. We need pics. ;D

i was going to do that today but got hung up..
i still need to cut out the rotten plywood.. it is embarrassing the way it is .
the rest is just older boat ,but it isn't too hammered though for its age.
interior is shot.. most of the stuff isn't even good for patterns.
sorry to get off track.

which cam ?
i bet i could use a bbc bellhousing one of the forum members has for sale.. then weld on extra ear or tab on it for the off beat hole... not that it would really need it.
{like darrel young used to do at long beach veterans stadium years ago}
the car only had 56k miles on it. im hoping the engine is still tight.
the thing runs even though the radiator is smashed.
it has all the bolt on stuff except the intake.. i would have to check and see if it had the later factory intakes swapped in.it has a hogged out mass air unit and slp intake lid, cat back exhaust, fanswitch over ride, iat resister.the normal stuff to get the car in the 13's.
this ls stuff is all new to me...
but i know they make some big numbers without to much work and stay together pretty good.
{almost scary like an asian engine..with ford heads ?
i'll bet i take a beating for saying that..}
someone pm'ed on headers.. i didn't think about the sandrail stuff..
i have a friend into that glamis stuff. i should hit him up and see what they are making..?
if not ,i was thinking sandwich plates like the splayed port first gen exhaust adapters..what ever is close to an LS-1 ?
im not really looking for full-on headers..unless they are like the rewarder stuff. i want to cover the whole engine bay with a hard cover and use gas struts.. like a newer boat.then use a bench and two buckets up front. similiar to a 22' scarab or eliminator or donzi.. i know it is an older boat and it might be tabboo.. but i want to load people in it safely with no problems.and i have some time and not alot of money...i want to use some ingenuity instead of tapping out my tapped out credit cards..
i wonder if foose does boats?
i will get some pics up.. i don't want to sound like i'm full of stale gas..
thanks everyone for the responses.
any info is always appreciated...

which cam ?
The TREX cam from Thunder Racing. 242/248 110 LSA .608 .613 Lift. You can bolt on an LS1 or LS6 intake, or buy an aftermarket one. You can use an LS2 Intake, but they have a bigger 90mm throttle body, but don't put down as good of numbers as a stock LS6 intake.

::) I don't know if Foose works on boats but I'm sure he will for some cash and he isn't going to be cheap. Machine work, custom headers, more time than money, I hope you can do your own machining and welding.
What HP and torque numbers does a LS1 put out?
-
Apparently the aussies have the LS motors in jets already.....

that looks damn good! ;D

cam and heads/ intake...somewheres around 450 hp 400 ft lbs
stock 325 hp...300 ft lbs ?
but it is lighter than an iron 460 ford.
and magnusunn makes a new blower for them...
im really after the lower bsfc and efi..
was hoping for a foose makeover...like on tlc ;)
LOL! im dreamin..
be a great episode.. doing boats instead of cars... O0

Damn, I could see this in my boat!

me too !
fingers crossed.
here is another link on the 6 litre.. you can pick them up for around a grand for a running core.
if the aussie are using them.. just a matter of time before the parts make it over here.

i have wondered about this for a while, does the ECU draw any power form the batteries while the boat is turned off?

Minimal, mostly just for KAM (keep alive memory)
-
Would it be enough to kill a battery, say if the boat wasnt started in 2 days?
-
Shouldn't be a problem. If you were going to store it for more than a few days I'd want to turn off a master disconnect switch.
If you're considering using the fuel injection with an aftermarket fuel management controller you would want to check out what the management system required, and if it will retain memory of your settings with the battery disconnected.
-
back to the headers, Have them built and go 8 into 1- it is probably one of the sickest things you will ever hear, and I can guarentee you will have the only boat on the water to sound like it >:D

Don't they use flash? If it is originally automotive based, flash is all that is used, you never know how long that ECU will sit on a shelf before being used.
