You haven't said if you are running a jet or v-drive. In a jet getting total advance quicker will not hurt you. I am running a 468BBC with a comp cams extreme marine hyd roller with HEI. I have it set up to get total advance at 2200 rpm and have the total timing at 36deg. When at idle 1100 rpm timing is at 16deg with the weakest advance springs available for an hei dizzy. Depending on your cam choice will determine idle timing needed........Just my 2 cents

A jet pump does not use much motor in the lower RPM's torque requirement wise, they start to pull some HP at about 3,000 RPM so since it is already at speed, it wont hurt to have the time "in" at that RPM, 36*BTDC is about the norm for a BBC with a compression ratio lower than 10:1 on good pump gas.
I would set it to 36* at 2500 and let her buck...

However, if you have problems starting it, it may require a seperate ignition toggle to get it cranking before you light the coil to keep it from killing the starter/battery while starting.
Most mechanical advances have approx 15 degrees of timing advance built into them.
