502 engine

What would make a push rod bend when turning the motor over? I bought a 21 foot ultra with Brodix heads on a 502 and when i took off the valve cover I noticed that I was missing a push rod i went to the auto parts store and picked up another push rod it was a melling push rod 308 and it would not let me start the rocker arm to the threads it was like it was too long. I grabbed another push rod shorter put it in tighten it down as soon as i turned it over i seen the push rod was bend what would cause that please any help???The engine has big brodie heads and is a roller motor with crane cams roller rocker arms...well figured it out the intake pushrods are shorter than the exhaust push rods ......

Cam timing could be off. Holding valve open to long and contacting piston.

Bent valve, wrong rod, connecting rod broken, timing chain slipped, broken cam gear bolts, broken valve spring, coil bind, rocker bind, bent rocker stud, guide plate misadjusted....

Other than that, I don't know.

Well thank you all for the replies it was the push rod on the intake are shorter that the push rods on the exhaust going to get the new one at 7 am and go from there thank you all once again....

So, just going to say it.

That pushrod went somewhere. .... get it out before it jambs itself in the cam gear and makes a ginormous mess.

Also, pull an intake pushrod off another cylinder and match it up to the thousandth of an inch.

You can't just willy nilly throw a pushrod in it, it could have custom rods and the rocker arm geometry could be compromised.

Just friendly words of caution, not douching up your thread.

Those are also adjustable rockers, they need to be adjusted properly. You can't just run em down.

Got all the valves adjusted all back together getting my 800 double pumper rebuilt then its the river time.....

No never found it must be down in the 12 quart oil pan not on top of the motor anywhere....

Actually change of plans pulling my motor going to change the oil oil filter and check the pan for the missing push rod...

Now you're coming around to my way of thinking...

Since you will be in there, pull a main cap and a rod cap to look into the future. Just torque to spec. and let her rip.... Take you 20 minutes tops and you will have an idea of where you are at....

Yes thank you for the info plan on doing that nothing like knowing your future......

I am also gonna put me a drain on my oil pan with a hose to make changing my oil way less of a choir.....

You can get the banjo fitting at a Parker Store, if you have those in your area. They can put a crimp collar on it for like $8.

The West Marine one work OK too...
