Title: Milkshake anyone?
Post by: NEVER WRIEDT on October 04, 2015, 02:36:36 PM
I just got back from the river and checked the oil. Not only is it well over full but it is very milky. BTW, the engine is a 383 sbc aluminum heads 750dp. I know this cannot be a condensation issue. I'm guessing a compression test is in the future but I'm also wondering if there is something else that might need be looked at first.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Just curious what the water pressure is at WOT.
Also, have you pulled the Intake Mani yet?

In sure GT will chime in soon for you, but until then...

Have you recently done anything new? How long have you had this boat/motor?

The motor has not been modified since the beginning of the season

Hmmm, how over full was it? Sorry for 1000 questions lol

Haven't drained it yet to know exactly but the level on the dipstick is about 3/8" past the full mark.

Did your milkshake bring all the boys to the yard?

When I had a boat with exhaust logs years ago I got the milkshake through the logs.

What happened was the flappers on the exhaust were gone, I came in a little hot to shore when I shut the engine off and the rush of water from behind was enough to splash up into the exhaust hose far enough to reach the open exhaust valves. When I went to start the engine it was a little slow, heard the hesitation which was the water in the cylinders, doesn't compress, but will work through the rings into the pan.

Did you have the back of your boat positioned where the waves splashed into the back of your boat for any period of time?

Just tossing possibilities out there, this one was an easy fix.

I did have the boat beached for a lot of the day but the flappers are brand new. I did have this problem at the beginning of the season but replaced a leaky exhaust elbow gasket. I thought I had the problem solved because the trips between then and now have been trouble free.
Maybe its leaking from the other manifold now?! I'll tear into it a little when I get home.

Your problem is the risers. The engine is too low for that type and not be at a front high angle (they are for a direct drive inboard).

Damn, I was afraid that's what it might be. Well, either that or the cam (comp xm270). My next question would be is there a different riser for those manifolds or am I looking at a whole new exhaust system. Thanks.

They did makea set of risers for those. I will need to do a little research to see what they had.

The cam (imo) only aggravated the problem.

The good news is it most likely didn't do any real engine damage. You caught it quickly

Change oil & filter, run for a short time getting the engine to operating temp, do it again.

What are some other options for an exhaust system that would fix this problem and help prevent reversion.

You want to keep through transom I'm assuming?

Not really
But I'd probably need to find something used

$500?

If I decided to go with an OT header, would i have reversion problems?

You shouldn't although if there is water feeding the exhaust at idle you might.

I set up a hand control valve at my seat and turn off the water to my exhaust when I off plane.

Some use the spring loaded T valve, if the spring goes weak like the one I used to have then it's a problem.

You can get OT for $500, probably some logs that would work for you, but not a set of good through transom headers. You'll probably notice a performance improvement with OT headers, but it will be much louder than you're used too.

I'm cool with the noise. Where can I find headers for a small block at $500.

When I wrote that I forgot we're talking small block. You'll have to do some searching.

Yeah I'm finding out there ain't alot of marine headers for sbc just laying around in garages.

I find them all the time. Do you really want headers?

I may have a line on some risers  (which are the same for small block as they are for a big block) and I need to call a friend in the great northwest to see if he has some logs and risers. I think he has some from a Red Line engine he blew up.

I'm just tossing around the idea of headers. To be honest I'd rather stick to manifolds. The risers that you're talking about, will they fit those glenwood manifolds I have? What would be your opinion (logs, risers vs. headers) with my setup?
Thanks in advance!

Your cam is not a lot larger than a stock performance deal.

You should be more than fine with the right risers. Worst case scenario, go with OT pipes on your logs.

I was on the phone with Glenwood yesterday and those particular manifolds will not work with their OT pipes. The risers they sell for those manifolds are $460 a pair and not in stock until December. Now I'm wondering if another manufacturers OT pipes will work. This whole deal just sucks. :banghead:

I pulled the plugs last night and they all looked fine just a little black. This weekend I will pressure test the cooling system just to make sure I don't have anything bad going on with the block or heads.
